Eve longs to be free and, with the world at war, the solitude of Alnaharra is broken, along with her faith and sanity. A small group consisting of 8 people live in a castle on Altnaharra and they are preparing for what they believe is the end of the world. All they know is the grey Isle of Altnaharra which sits in the black sea off the wildest coast of Scotland. I enjoyed Little Eve a lot while I was reading it, but having come to the end I find myself wishing Ward had written something more innovative – something as thrilling as the best bits of her debut, as unique as her way with language – and I doubt I'll remember it for very long. I fully admit that it took me a bit to get into Little Eve; it’s a little on the slow side; but make no mistake, it’s a highly atmospheric and a well-written book.

I’ve given 3 stars as the quality of writing is brilliant and she uses language beautifully - the issue is with the story itself, maybe it would’ve been better suited to a novella as there didn’t seem to be enough weight to carry it the length of a full novel. He loaded the side of beef onto Bill using a harness and clips of his own design, then set off along the path which followed the sea. Set on the far north coast of Scotland, the time starting during World War One, and taking us past the end of World War Two, Eve and Dinah are trapped – willingly or otherwise at various points – in the family established by John Bearings, who has created his own isolationist cult, with two women – Alice and Norah – and four children that they ‘rescued’ from orphanages or mothers who did not want them. Instead this was an historical fiction with seriously gothic overtones, set at the end of World War One and containing the usual gothic elements. Sometimes they are “shunned,” which means the others must ignore the shunned person until Uncle says it’s over.

The spikes on the portcullis were sharp and Jamie “did not want to put himself under, as it looked as if it might go all the way down at any time, and into me. Gabriel Iglesias, writing for Locus, similarly felt that it was "one of Ward's best books", praising the atmospheric setting and storytelling. But there is one survivor, Dinah, who points the finger of blame at fellow cult member Evelyn as the killer. I think if I would have read a hard copy, maybe I would have had a slightly easier time keeping track of everything.

They worship snakes, and through a ritual of starvation and cleansings, pray for the day when a giant snake will rise from the sea. This gothic tale includes so many bloody murders, jaw dropping, heart throbbing moments and the story unfolds with a twist that you didn’t see it coming! One half of the narrative deals with the aftermath both immediate and in further years, through letters and diary entries from Dinah, the sole survivor; the other half follows Eve as a child, moving steadily towards the murder and making more sense of Dinah’s letters, but also making it clear that at least one of these accounts is unreliable. the book opens with a man stumbling upon a series of brutal, ritualistic murders that have taken place on altnaharra, a desolate isle off the coast of scotland that served as home for a ragtag "family" (read: cult). Sin embargo, a medida que nos adentramos en la historia de Eve y Dinah hasta la masacre, va surgiendo una verdad más oscura y extraña.
