Dry lube comes out of the bottle wet, commonly a fast-flowing liquid but once it dries it leaves a wax film on the chain. It’s this wax that provides the necessary lubrication, the liquid is simply the carrier for the wax. Off-road, SMOOVE is also market-leading. 300-600 miles is achievable through a mixture of terrains and during a harsh water-logged British Winter, makes 150-250 mile epics a total breeze.

The best bicycle chain lubes get right into the links of your chain to lubricate it, and then stay there. The latest chain lubes include fiendishly clever additives which allow them to coat metal surfaces without attracting crud. They're expensive, but arguably worth the money if you're running an expensive transmission and want to prolong its life.As for Green Oil's claims of over 200 miles or 124 miles between applications, we found that after 100 miles of riding our chain was still running smoothly. Oh boy, you wouldn't like how I got only 500 miles out of my last chain (Shimano HG40) before it was stretched 1%. That's with obsessive wiping after every ride. On a city bike. Step 2 > Apply on the inside of the chain while turning the pedals to ensure that the lube gets worked into the chain. Keep applying as a constant dribble until you see lube spanning the pins between every other link.

According to ZFC, the difference between a good and bad lubricant can comfortably amount to five to ten watts at a 250-watt load. These losses increase in magnitude as the load increases, too. By all means, apply a wet lube for a torrential ride, but make sure you clean your chain effectively afterwards. Don't just reapply a fresh layer of lubricant on top of the grit and dirt that's on your chain. The same goes for 'dry' lube.

In short, it's up to you whether you want to invest more in a good chain lubricant, which may have a higher initial cost than others. It is worth thinking about, especially for mid and higher-tier groupsets which most performance road bikes generally have. Because highly refined paraffin wax contains practically no oil, waxed chains are prone to rusting after wet rides. You’ll have to be prepared to dry, clean and re-wax the chain, or top it up with a wax-based drip lube, as soon as possible after riding. Wax doesn't seem to last as long in Winter as I'd like, but I've gotten used to wiping off and re-waxing my chain after rides (not before) and leaving it to dry overnight. I've not stretched to two-chains per bike, though technically there'd be no real hassle involved. Taking a chain off takes seconds these days, and shaking it clean in a bottle of solvent a few minutes. Ditto dipping it in wax and hanging it. CeramicSpeed claims the new formula lasts for 300km each time – not even 'up to 300km' but 300km – and makes no mention of any conditions affecting that. In my experience the UFO Drip lasts just over 100km in typical British winter, at which point the screeching from the chain was a bit of a giveaway. Given how clean the chain stays, noise is the easiest way I found to tell. Wet rides can be a problem, or more specifically, the rust the lube can allow afterwards. After a wet ride I found that extra care and time were needed to fully dry the chain, as you are not reapplying anything.

You can source the ingredients separately yourself, but ZFC says that commercial blends such as Molten Speed Wax use more highly refined paraffin wax than what is normally available to consumers, for optimum performance and cleanliness. Effetto Mariposa Flower Power chain lubricant glides into the honourable mention spot for a combination of great performance, value and some of the unique features it brings to the table.Ah, so we're discussing wax, which won't lubricate until the chain is hot enough to melt it! A little petrol residue might just fill that gap! This also suggests that heating an environmentally friendly chain cleaner above the melting temperature of the wax, will solve the cleaning problem as long as you rinse with boiling pure water. An ultrasonic cleaning bath might also help, but with this level of faff you might get more rides in by recycling chains every 600-890 miles. PRSboy: Squirt seems to be the holy grail of lubes, as long as you don't mind reapplying after a wet ride. I've been most impressed. The downside of wet lubes? These same properties also make it a magnet for dirt and grime (especially if applied excessively), and the extra viscosity also means lower outright efficiency compared to thinner lubes, due to the added viscous friction. Again, for each new chain, I would use a new CS-6800 11-28T. Once these tests were complete, I was sent several of the new wax-based chain lubes to use. WHY DIDN’T YOU USE (100%) WAX/PARAFFIN? If you're environmentally conscious there are more eco-friendly cleaners available such as Green Oil's Clean Chain Degreaser Jelly.
