Are You My Mother? focuses more on Bechdel’s relationship with her mother, both while growing up and as an adult. It’s a quieter book in some respects, but it does go into detail about Bechdel’s ongoing mental health struggles and how they are linked to her upbringing. Olivia also does quite a lot of really exciting small-press or self-published adult work, including a series called Darlin’, which is historical fiction, also about werewolves in the American West in the 1800s. That’s a much darker and more violent type of story, because it’s an adult storytelling. It touches on a number of complicated issues around American history and colonization, and ecological destruction, and things like that, but done with just breathtaking visual chops, character work, and narrative storytelling ability. You’ve already talked to Tillie, but one of the other books I was going to recommend before I saw the other recommendations — I’ll still recommend it! On a Sunbeam is gorgeous! I love Tillie Walden’s work. Spinning is another book of hers that I really, really enjoyed. I just have an incredible love for the way she populates fantastical and science fiction universes. On a Sunbeam has this really lovely combination of being an exploration of relationships between young people, in ways that could be described as slice of life, but the setting is done in a way that really takes you to a different place. I love that about her work. It’s pretty accessible — it’s a webcomic that’s been collected into a full volume. Linette Moore, The Prisoner of Shiverstone It is 17th century France, the age of discovery and scientific revolution. Sulvain, a mysterious traveler, is absorbed in the Parisian academic scene. Through his friendship with the renowned Christian Huygens, Sulvain has the chance to study the latest discoveries of the distant cosmos. (We profiled it here!) ChaosLife is a semi-autobiographical comic, focusing on the queer relationship between A. Stiffler and K. Copeland, who create the comic! It also delves into politics, GSM issues, mental health, pop culture, cats, and other randomness.

I really think The Magic Fish is a book we can consider classic, which is crazy, because it’s been out for only a few years. But it is already, to me, in the vein of books like Maus and American Born Chinese, when you think of graphic novels that are going to affect the graphic novels that come out later. I mean, all the kids who read The Magic Fish are going to be like, Well, I’ll make a graphic novel about a fairy tale and about my identity. Jarad Greene, A-Okay An ancient empire awakens, bent on reclaiming the world they once dominated. A small group of people, drawn together by a common cause, are determined to stop them. However, they face more than threats from the outside…. A queer, high fantasy comic (with a dash of sci fi). And his erotic work is, I think, genuinely some of the best that’s coming out of the entire queer comics landscape right now. So if you’re looking specifically for erotic queer comics recommendations, you really can’t do better than what Otava is doing right now. Two thumbs extremely up for his work in particular. Fantastical and overflowing with imagination and narrative worldbuilding, Monstresscan often feel overwhelming but having a protagonist as elegant yet gruesome as Maika, and having her be queer (and not the only queer character either) is endlessly exciting.

What We Do

Long-running comic about a gay, Canadian, bed and breakfast owner and his string of generally hot house guests!

A lighthearted look at life, live and sports through the eyes of Casey Wilkes, a young gay man in his late 20’s, living in New York City.A coming-of-age story with magic, gems, and swords, Agents of the Realm stars five women who become super-powered sword-fighters, all while trying to get to college class on time! Monstress is an Image Comics series beloved by fans and a wonderful example of how to writer a powerful queer protagonist. Julian Drees is experiencing his first love with the extremely popular, dreamy, wonderful, — yet completely anonymous — romance novelist Sydney Morgan. The mission? Identify Sydney Morgan. This webcomic follows the wild adventures of an upbeat hippie, living her life in love and joy. (And beer and sex.) You’ll get to meet her various other friends, all as lovely and bonkers as she is. This comic also includes an ace character! Drugged and confused a young man finds himself stranded in a strange land facing monsters, odd locals, and the mystery of who is behind it all. There are no romance subplots here, and a few asexual characters appear regularly!

Secondly, she has carved out a powerful queer protagonist in Maika Halfwolf, a stoic and often terrifying main character. This is a delightfully gay story set in a gritty and dark steampunk world. Finally, Trung Le Nguyen’s The Magic Fish, published by Random House Graphic, may end up being the underdog that sweeps the prize. The self-contained graphic novel is a coming-of-age story focussing on Tiến, a young Vietnamese-American boy struggling to bridge a cultural and linguistic divide, and explain to his parents that he’s gay. A boy prince falls down a cursed well and goes on creepy adventures in the underworld. He teams up with two sisters to find a way home. Ace-friendly adventure!

A coming-of-age tale of the different ghosts and monsters who change — for better or worse — as they attempt to uncover the mystery behind their existence and heal (or run) from past mistakes. The main character Acantha is ace/aro. Matt Doyle shares, “It’s a good feeling knowing that I can bring another perspective into the comic book world that hasn’t always been heavily represented. When I was a kid, I identified with comics about outsiders and anti-heroes that didn’t fit in. It has always been a goal of mine to create stories that give voices to the voiceless.” A webcomic about being LGBT nerds, girl nerds, nerds of color, disabled nerds, and other kinds of nerds that don’t get as much love. This is a webcomic about being a nerd who’s constantly facing down sexism, racism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, classism, ableism, fat-hate, and other prejudices and -isms from their nerdery of choice.Prentice is out of his element as an ex-soldier among thieves, but looking for that place to belong is worth the frustration. But a chance meeting in the forest leads Prentice to a cell in the city’s massive network of thieves!
