Description

Conventional amps work great on stage. But what about everywhere else you play? Most amps are just small versions of stage amps - but how you play at home isn’t just a small version of how you play on stage, so why would an amp based on that really give you what you need? Take your talent anywhere. This is the ultimate amp for guitarists on the move. Alongside mains power, the Yamaha THR5 offers battery operation with up to seven hours of life. You'll be able to shred all night long. Sound quality is subjective, but it’s hard not to be impressed with the sounds Yamaha manages to produce through the tiny built-in speakers. The amp tends to accentuate the midrange, but overall, the sound is quite natural and pleasant. But the THR5 really comes alive when you activate the effects. The reverb sounds stunning, creating the uncanny illusion that the sound is coming from a bigger space somewhere beyond the tiny amp. THR is bundled with Cubase AI, Stinberg's professional music production application that offers full-fledged recording and editing.

But as I mentioned before, Yamaha THR5 is one of the best small practice amps that you can possibly find on the market right now. I think that if you can’t afford it right now, it’s really worth it to save up some money to eventually get it. I’m sure that you won’t be disappointed! FAQ How loud is the Yamaha THR5? Yamaha THR5 is loud enough to efficiently practice at home without annoying your neighbors. It’s not the loudest amp in the world, but it can also work pretty well for small jam sessions or intimate performances. Where can I find out more about Yamaha amps? What do you think about that Yamaha amp? Would you add it to your gear collection? Leave a comment down below and let me know what you think, I’m really interested to hear your thoughts!COMPRESSOR, COMPRESSOR/CHORUS, CHORUS, FLANGER*, PHASER*, TREMOLO*, DELAY, DELAY/REVERB, HALL REVERB, SPRING REVERB*, *NOISE GATE (*only available in the THR Editor) Brit Hi: EL34s keep the classic British clarity while a higher gain preamp allows you to push the amp into serious distortion. VCM effects are capable of capturing subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable even in today's digital production environment. YAMAHA Hi-Fi Audio Technology

For information regarding the noise issues suffered by the first batch of these amps scroll to the bottom of this listing. If you bought this amp with one of the original suspect power supplies from us then we will be sending you a replacement soon It’s easy to have so much fun playing with the THR5A that you never get around to connecting the amp to a computer, but that would be a big mistake. The USB connector allows the THR5A to act as an audio interface, bringing its stereo sound, effects, and mic models to almost any recording software. In addition, Yamaha supplies a computer editor that allows you to manipulate the amp, save banks of presets, and access more controls than the physical knobs on the amp do. OTHER: Tone and volume controls; four mic simulations; effects include compression, chorus, flanger, phase shifter, tremolo, delay, reverb, and noise gate; built in tuner, tone, and volume controls; USB computer interfaceOne notably missing feature was any kind of on board EQ (outside of the app). We would like to have seen at least bass and treble dials to shape the sound a bit more. Firstly, I highly encourage you to consider getting the Fender Frontman 10G. This is actually one of the most popular practice amps in the world. It’s designed mainly for beginners, so more advanced players may not be satisfied with its sound quality. Still, it’s cheap and it does what it’s supposed to – isn’t it all that matters? The original Yamaha THR10 amplifier was a revelation when it was launched a few years ago;marketed as an all-encompassing practice amplifier. Withits compact lunchbox-style chassis, theTHR10 boasted9 different amp simulations, multiple modulation and time-based effects, 5 savable presets, a full 3-band EQ section and a pair of 8cm full-range speakers. Most of THR's effects feature VCM effects processors. Based on the technology used in Yamaha's professional audio mixers, VCM effects give unsurpassed realism and quality. Virtual Circuitry Modeling effects are capable of capturing subtleties that basic digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable. THR's Virtual Tube Illumination includes a simulated orange tube glow from the metal speaker grille.

As briefly mentioned in the above section, the THR5 can be used as an interface for recording in your preferred DAW via the USB connection. The lead setting was a little bland for our tastes. It landed somewhere between clean and crunch, so it didn’t give us any real clarity, nor did it give us enough break up to make it tonally interesting. Brit Hi was a fun setting to play with, especially as you don’t typically expect that much growl to come from such a small amp! We also enjoyed experimenting with the modern voicing, which when paired with the phaser effect and hall reverb gave us some ethereal “Bill and Ted” style tones. If you don’t like the sound of Yamaha THR5 or you simply can’t afford it right now, that’s totally fine! There’s quite a few other really good cheap amps that also deserve a lot of attention. Nevertheless, it all depends on how much are you willing to spend on a new piece of gear.

THR Operation Guide

The output signal for DI is very low, and there's nothing you can do to control the gain for DI. All the settings for master, volume, and gain control affect only the processed sounds, not the DI. In my case, my guitar signal was peaking at -34db when recording, which is pretty low, creating a bad signal to noise ratio. When compared to Focusrite Scarlett Solo, for example, the difference in quality is gigantic, so I recommend you to use a proper audio interface for better sound recording instead of the THR5. Designed from the ground up, every part of THR's design, from the preamp to the speaker enclosure, is focused on delivering the ultimate playing experience through a tone that belies THR's ultra compact size. The best part is Yamaha provides an aux cable and a copy of Cubase AI to get started with recording with no extra investment. What’s important, this is a battery-powered amp. Of course, you can also use it with the supplied AC adapter, but if you decide to use the batteries, you can be sure that it will last up to six hours of playing. This is a big advantage, especially for those who like to perform! It’s a really good combo for busking.
