Description

It takes about a nanosecond watching the 65C845K – especially with HDR sources – to see that TCL’s boasts about its TV being incredibly bright for its money were much more than idle marketing speak. Its pictures really do jump off the screen with an intensity far beyond anything else we have seen at anything like the same price. In fact, they leave the vast majority of much more expensive mid-range and even a few really premium TVs looking dull by comparison. Including, as TCL would want it to, OLED models, with even the latest MLA and QD-OLED sets falling some way short of the sort of brightness the C845K can achieve, particularly when it comes to full-screen bright imagery.

It has other features we would only expect of a much pricier TV, too. IMAX Enhanced gives you cinema-style visuals, while Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X provide immersive audio. Featuring an ECO mode, the TCL 65C835 allows for energy-saving operation, contributing to a more sustainable usage. It also offers voice control functionality, enabling convenient hands-free operation through voice commands. With the electronic program guide (EPG) and on-screen display (OSD) features, users can easily navigate and access their favorite programs and settings.

While TV designs typically seem keen to crow about keeping speakers hidden away as if they’re some sort of dirty secret, personally I have no problem with the TCL’s public display of sound-quality affection. It won us over in our review, earning itself five stars and a subsequent What Hi-Fi? Award as a result, due to its sheer performance per pound proposition. It's contrast-rich and vivid colours secured it the win, making a case for opting for this cheaper model over the more expensive OLED sets on the market. Without the scene-by-scene picture date of Dolby Vision and HDR10+ to guide it, however, the 65C815K’s presets rather lose the plot. Saturations with the industry standard HDR10 sources that actually make up the majority of HDR content are pushed way too far, losing subtle shading and detail in the process. As a result, bright pictures can end up resembling weird hand-painted caricatures rather than natural video.

The built-in Onkyo-designed speaker system is good enough to mean you can manage without adding a costly external audio solution. When it comes to operating systems, TCL hedges its bets. One each of these three TVs runs Android TV, Google TV and Roku OS. Across all of them, you’ll get familiar features like VESA mounting, HDR, Dolby Audio, virtual assistant support, and more. The first brand to seriously introduce mini LED technology to the TV world was Chinese giant TCL. Yet sadly for UK shoppers those debut mini LED models didn't make it to our shores. That's changing for 2021 courtesy of TCL's new C825 range, represented here by the 65in 65C825K. Perhaps we should conclude that while the TCL is a stellar TV, the rating is based on price and while the Sony and Hisense cost more, they are in fact better TVs. There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used.

Virtualized 3D sound

The Google smarts also make setup an easy process, getting the TV on your home network and walking you through how to use the remote control for voice activation. TCL UK’s C745K Series is one of the budget brand’s more premium TV offerings, and it's built with gamers in mind. As well as a refresh rate of 120Hz (or 144Hz for PC gamers), it has a wealth of gaming features built-in, like Gaming Master 2 aiming aid, shadow enhancement, gaming picture mode, VRR and ALLM. Similar to the CPU, the GPU may have more than one core, which serve for the parallel computing of various tasks and achieving better performance with various software applications.
