Having been in a similar situation, I could relate to what the characters had experienced and realize that there is no one path through something like this. The proof copy of the book I received was fully recyclable, though I have no plans to do that at all, I shall pass it to my family members to read and enjoy. Not wanting to give much away, but I also really loved the story between Gwen and her parents, and how they are handling a personal loss that happened to them.

From 8am on the day I sat down intending to just read a few chapters of Preloved to 8pm that evening when I finished, I internally screamed, ‘OMG SAME!We know deep down that it can’t [be recycled], and we’re probably causing more problems for somebody down the line, but we still think, ‘Oh, if I put it in recycling, maybe there's a chance that it will get turned into something new. When she’s made redundant from a job she hardly cares about, she takes herself out for a fancy dinner. Though I did really like the part where Gwen is talking about job hunting, page 66-67, that had me howling.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear how these people link to Gwen and other characters in the book. I've had so many experiences where I've loved a book right up until the 5% and then I want to hurl it across the room! Are all her friends (married, cooped-up, privy to a life she doesn't care for or have access to) secretly having fun without her?She speaks little and rarely to her parents whose whole lives seem to revolve around the council’s wheelie-bin timetable.

Preloved — Lauren Bravo

It choked me up many times with its small, understated, beautiful details about feeling lost, family grief and the meandering friendships of your thirties. I just hummed along with the first, rather long like 2/3's of the book, and then all of a sudden it made sense. Gwen’s story is warming, funny, heartfelt and painfully relatable in lots of ways, but the last third-or-so really pulled the rug out from underneath me.

What she hitherto perceived as a place where cast-offs turn to fly soon becomes a point of renewal, a space bereft of judgement where the hidden lives of other volunteers and preloved objects reveal themselves to her in all their richness, and where she, too, can find herself beginning to transform. Gwen's shrewd observations of life as a 30-something in London were also entertaining and relatable. I loved watching Gwen grow and throw herself into new, exciting challenges that take her out of her comfort zone. The final third of the book was particularly moving and highlighted the different ways people process grief. So many themes are interwoven in this novel, there is plenty to think about on the pages and it is a story that will stay with you after reading the book.
