Reading the flashback chapters about the girl’s imaginary world were a wonderful contrast to the current situation. That this is the only thing about America that I won’t miss makes me feel more tired, more pissed off. has left Cat clues: a treasure hunt that leads them back to Mirrorland, where the truth lies waiting. Between them, the gray firth and the low rolling hills of Kinghorn and Burntisland on the opposite shore. I’ve seen that a lot of readers struggled to get into the story due to the mix of genres, not knowing what’s real and what’s fantasy at the start.

The book opens with twelve year old identical twins, "El" Ellice and "Cat" Catriona appearing at night on the docks of Edinburgh, battered and covered in blood.

There is a sense that the novel is reverse engineered for twists, and nothing is as tiresome as a predictable twist. As such, this is a one-time read, where the reading experience is motivated primarily by the unknown and living through the novel's engrossing tale. Compare and contrast 36 Westeryk Road with the house in Rebecca or The Haunting of Hill House or The Witch Elm or another film or novel of your choosing featuring a spooky, atmospheric house. It is not included in promotions available to our main range products, as stated in our terms of service. This is a story about a mysterious death and a long-buried secret, but it's also a fascinating, terrifying portrait of how we seek refuge in our imaginations—and how easily imagination can be confused with reality.

He pauses, and even though he's only being filmed from the waist up, I can tell he's widening his stance, like a gunslinger.

By the time we got to that big reveal, it was so out of left field that we had to have a character actively sit down and explain it, in the ultimate telling versus showing strategy. Though his face is turned away from the camera, no one could mistake his agitation for anything else: his shoulders are high, his hands fists. When they grow up, they grow apart, their estrangement solidifying them when El manipulates Cat’s boyfriend, Ross, a neighborhood boy and occasional part of their Mirrorla Cat is convinced that El is fine because she has an unshakable belief that she would have felt it if her sister were dead, and the cruelty of going missing is exactly what she would expect from El.

El and Cat – Ellice MacAuley and Catriona Morgan – were twins who lived in their own wild world when they were children. He pauses, and even though he’s only being filmed from the waist up, I can tell he’s widening his stance, like a gunslinger. I have to confess to being very confused initially and I didn’t really understand what I was reading but I am so pleased that I persevered because the pay off was worth it.

The] reader comes away enormously enriched and grateful for having been allowed to travel ‘piggyback’ on Pulford’s shoulder and profit from his diverse and unexpected encounters. My thanks to The Borough Press for providing me with a copy of the book via Netgalley and to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for an invitation to join the Blog Tour. We do spend the majority of the time in the girl’s childhood home, a lot of that time in particular through flashbacks and it can feel a little surreal.
