Description

Some erotic component was usually imposed on Rollin by meddling producers, forcing him to add ill-fitting sex scenes into his productions, but here - more so than anywhere else in his filmography - the erotic screens feel truly organic to the story. Jealousy, vengeance, obsession, cannibalism, and blood-drinking collide in Fascination, director Jean Rollin's decadent fantasy of sex and death.

However, vocal claritycan be fairly strong in some sequences, as can the slamming of doors and other hollow effects in the chateau. After a struggle with his hostage he is located in the woodland by the other thieves and is forced to take refuge in the aforementioned castle, where he meets the two girls. Redemption Films USA and Salvation Films present Fascination in a standard keepcase offering with artwork that perfectly exemplifies the film.

Despite going on general release across the country, only one copy of Fascination is known to exist – a 35mm print held at the bfi in its original nitrate format. In the middle of rural France there's a castle where two attractive females - Eva and Elisabeth -waste away their days, waiting for some initially unspecified event. Some staining on the print flickers in and out for a few minutes, but it's not enough to detract from the beauty of the film or the clarity of its presentation. All we're working with is a Photo Gallery and a line-up of Trailers, one of which is for Fascination and two others for Jean Rollin's work ( Nude Vampire and Iron Rose.

The sex scenes are more intense and explicit than Rollin's previous horror outings but remain suffused with a heady surrealism that makes the encounters play like animated works of art.Soon after this Rollins made the interesting low budget nazi zombie movie 'zombie lake' , it's not near as good as this but it's fun. This reveals itself in full-blood fashion with the film's most potent dramatic displays -- a set of short homilies voiced by the captivating Franca Mai. Thus, the film plays more like a pastoral version of the blood-bathing Elizabeth Bathory saga with the eroticism aspects pushed up to full throttle (a la Borowczyk's Immoral Tales).

The most interesting extra is a pair of very extended sex scenes with Lahaie, both softcore but treading close to the edge with a handful of shots. It is, however, a huge step in the right direction in terms of giving this director's work the respectful presentations that some of us feel it has long deserved. There is still plenty of print damage on this one, however they did master this from the original film negative! Meanwhile the other bandits are keeping a safe distance from the castle effectively preventing Marc from leaving while waiting for their chance to launch an attack. The sound quality of the film has never been spectacular, but the audio here is pleasant and distortion-free, with Philippe D'Aram's beautiful score seeping over the decadent imagery like a bloody veil.By 1931, Carroll had successfully made the transition from support player to lead actor, and her role in Fascination as Gwenda Farrell – a jaded actress on the rebound – is arguably one of her best. Yet there's something about the feasting elements that blend well with its ideas, though all the uniqueness in the world cannot shelter a film so light on story with the plotholes and poor supportive acting structure that it exhibits.
