Description

Herbert Lumsden originally enlisted as a soldier in the Territorial Army before being commissioned into the Royal Horse Artillery in World War 1 where he won a Military Cross, transferring to the 12th Lancers (12L) in 1925 before commanding the Regiment from 1938-1940. The Cavalry and Guards Club is a London gentlemen's club, at 127 Piccadilly, situated next to the RAF Club. At the hipper end of the scale, there are places like the Groucho (a repellent sh1te-hole) and Soho House, both of which are slightly ludicrous in their attempts to be cool and Soho House is very sniffy about who gets to be a member. Though socially distanced for everyone?s safety, the Troopers and Chelsea Pensioners enjoyed hot bacon rolls and a good cup of tea in the September early morning sunshine. The horses were treated to a small handful of polo mints and were given lots of attention from the veterans who?d missed their equine friends. The soldiers young and old shared tales of service life today and in the past with lots of smiles and increasing laughter as the military banter filled the brisk morning air.

Le CGC est l’un des plus prestigieux club - William et Harry en sont membres et les deux "royal patrons" sont le Duc de Kent et la Duchesse de Cornouailles. The kit also gives us the ability to link in virtually with other Squadrons in other locations enabling us to widen our training spectrum. Last night we were joined by soldiers from A Squadron in Nottingham and soldiers who were at home in various locations. The Cavalry and Guards Club is a London gentlemen's club, at 127 Piccadilly, situated next to the RAF Club. It has three foundation dates: In a number of troop level working groups the future of battlefield mobility, Counter Mobility and Force Protection were discussed from both the industry and Field Army perspectives. While the foundation date is generally given as 1810, Sheppard (ed 1960) gives a date of 1813 and Thevoz (2018) gives a date 0f 1815. The club narrowly avoided closure in 1987, when its landlord sold the premises on to a property developer, who planned to convert the building into apartments. This was averted through the membership raising the capital to buy the property for the club. The Guards Club, established in 1810, was a London Gentlemen's club for officers of the Guards Division, originally defined by the club as being the Coldstream Guards, Grenadier Guards or Scots Guards, traditionally the most socially elite section of the British Army. Officers of the Welsh and Irish Guards were not able to join until the second half of the 20th century. Its clubhouse at 70 Pall Mall was the first to be built on that street, which later became noted for its high concentration of clubs; earlier clubs had been focused on the adjoining St James's Street. Le Club fonctionne ainsi comme un mini hotel, avec comme fonction essentielle l’organisation d’événements pour ses membres: baptêmes, anniversaires, mariages etc. The club narrowly avoided closure in 1987, when its landlord sold the premises on to a property developer, who planned to convert the building into luxury flats. This was averted through the membership raising the capital to buy the property for the club. The advantage from the traveller’s perspective, as LuganoPirate has noted, is the reciprocal club network. I have used reciprocal clubs in Bangkok, New York, Mumbai, London and, most recently, San Francisco where I enjoyed a few very pleasurable gin-and-tonics with a colleague one evening at less-than-market prices in an uncrowded, quiet, oak-panelled, comfortable bar walking distance from the business district. These places really are a haven, and even if you are not with someone it is very pleasant to be able to go to a place where you know you will have a friendly reception, probably be able to have a chat with someone else at the bar if you feel so inclined, usually pay less than ordinary bar or restaurant prices, and in any event not feel too sad if you are on your own because so many members’ clubs do have a contingent of regulars who go soloPall Mall, South Side, Past Buildings: No 71 Pall Mall, Sir Edward Walpole's House', in Survey of London: Volumes 29 and 30, St James Westminster, Part 1, ed.
