Those fine folk at Arrow Video are looking to make amends though, releasing Sailor Suit and Machine Gun on Blu-ray in the UK, US and Canada this month. Given my great love of Asian cinema, I thought I’d give the film a shot and my thoughts follow. There’s no doubt that the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is easy to shoot – as was already proven above. However, Umarex USA tells HAM that in their testing: “Hot Hands body warmers will keep the 88g CO2 bottle and expansion chamber at 70F for several hours when the outside temperature is 38F. In our experience, these warmers have not taken the CO2 to a dangerous temperature when applied at any ambient temperature.” The Dragon Claw is the perfect big game hunting rifle. And with its .50 caliber, simple design, and superb accuracy, it's no wonder it's one of the top-selling air rifles on the market. But, shoot it as a pcp arrow rifle and you have yourself the most powerful hunting setup you can find. Whether you're using .50 caliber slugs or Air Bolts, it can easily take everything from feral hogs to cape buffalo. You won't find a better air-powered arrow rifle than the Dragon Claw. Why We Like ItIn the past, I’ve mentioned that airguns are becoming more widely accepted as a ‘method of take’ in the States, with new regulations coming into effect every year. Standard calibre (.177-.25) spring-piston and pre-charged pneumatic guns are often used for small game and pest control, with the larger calibre pellet rifles in .25 - .35 gaining acceptance as effective predator guns. There has also been a dramatic increase in the number of .30 - .50 calibre guns (generating over 1000fpe) being used for big game. The way that Umarex has been able to hit this ground-breaking price point is by using CO2 as the power source. All the other currently-available air archery guns are PCPs. It is extremely important to make a note about the recommended age of the nerf gun usage. Most of them are suitable for kids of eight years of age or older. And obviously, you might be tempted to buy toys for your kids that are made for a little older kids so that they can play with them for longer. However, you need to let go off of this in this case. Every kid requires physical strength to control the parts. Moreover, there are precautions for safety for certain ages as well. After all, you want your kids to enjoy it over everything. 2. Sailor Suit and Machine Gun sees Yakushimaru play Izumi Hoshi, a young high school student who discovers that she’s inherited the title of chairman/boss of the Medaka Yakuza family after both the Medaka head and her father, his sole heir, both die around the same time. For our HAM testing, we set-up an archery target at 22 yards from the firing point. Although this was closer than the 40 Yards range we used to test the Umarex AirSaber PCP arrow gun, we felt it to be a more realistic range for an air archery product of this power. The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is supplied with a fiber optic front and aperture rear sight. This rear sight is adjustable for both elevation and windage, although we would have liked to see a greater range of adjustability to aid with sighting-in. In most states where airguns are permitted for big game, there are provisions on the powerplant used – it must be a PCP; calibre – most states have a .30 calibre minimum; and sometimes power – as an example, must generate over 215fpe in Texas. Most, if not all, of the rifles suitable as big-game guns are set up to shoot cast lead bullets, as opposed to the traditional diabolo-style airgun pellet. Cast lead bullets tend to be heavier and have better ballistics and terminal performance compared to diabolo pellets.

The film won several prizes at the Awards of the Japanese Academy and went on to get two of its own spin-off TV series in 1982 and later in 2006. It even spawned a “spiritual sequel” in 2016 with Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation. But then this is not a target rifle, it’s a hunting arrow rifle! Overall the HAM Testers found the AirJavelin’s trigger quite acceptable for it’s intended use. Sailor Suit and Machine Gun was not what I was expecting at all. From the title and various poster designs, I presumed the film would be a wild, exploitative action movie, but that’s not really the case. There are yakuza tropes, some action sequences, a little sex and a fair amount of comedy, but really, in essence, this is a bizarre coming of age drama. Whilst this wasn’t what I imagined, it ended up being much better than I hoped.

It is, however, printed in color, another indication of Umarex’s high expectations for this price-leading arrow gun. That’s a long answer to the “Is it good value?” question. In summary, the HAM Team considers that – yes – the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is great value. It allows anyone to get involved with air archery for the minimum of investment, yet it’s powerful enough for small game hunting and target practice. BUY FROM AIRGUN DEPOT Our expectations for this CO2-powered arrow gun were that the first shot would be the fastest, followed by a steady decline in FPS. This is what Umarex test data indicates.I didn’t mind the added length and slower pace though. This is largely because I found the film thematically fascinating. For one, it explores its coming-of-age aspects in great detail. On top of typical tropes such as developing a sense of responsibility, the film looks at how a sense of trust can develop as you mature, through a wider perspective of who is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. There’s a strong sexual coming-of-age aspect too, though this is thankfully not exploited beyond some disturbing threats of assault. It’s not a lot of extra material, but the ‘Girls, Guns and Gangsters’ documentary is excellent, giving a thorough look at the making of the film and the work of its director.
