Description

She was a remarkable woman, to have managed the gigantic enterprise of the family business at a time when women were expected to be helpless and ignorant and stay at home with the children. Forced to travel with him to New South Wales, she arrives to find Sydney Town a brutal, dusty, hungry. As usual, he’s full of confidence, dismisses reports of troubles in the colony and seems to have no concerns about taking wife and young son half way across the world. Grenville’s other novels include Sarah Thornhill, The Lieutenant, Lilian’s Story, Dark Places and Joan Makes History. The notion of not really getting the full take on current events, seemed as probable in events in that era.

Jaučiuosi suklaidinta lietuviško viršelio – man jis toks visai ne istorinis, gal net šiuolaikiškas, susisiejantis su kokia knyga apie mišką ar gamtos pažinimą. Her fiction is always a challenge, a goad to our complacencies, social decorums and repressions…Richly imagined…[Provides] the shock we perhaps need to remind us of what might still be possible. We watched as one dived into the water — with such a smack, it must have hurt — missed its prey, wheeled up, smacked down again, staggered into the air. Twenty-one-year- old Elizabeth is hungry for life but, as the ward of a Devon clergyman, she knows not to expect much. They might have talked together about what they felt about that destiny, but none of them could risk putting it in writing.

The novel concludes with Elizabeth’s assertions of her sense of being at home in Australia, scaffolded by her knowledge that the property she loves is stolen Aboriginal land. An astonishingly brilliant historical tale about 21 year old Elizabeth Veale who lives a simple life with few prospects. It reveals the strength and determination deep within Elizabeth; her passions, her love, her empathy.

Only Lieutenant Dawes, a keen astronomer, makes any effort to communicate with them in their own language and understand their customs. But this is an entirely different, convincing and empathetic take on what she may have felt and what may have motivated her. The writing is in brief chapters each exquisitely sculpted with deep insights into love, societal norms of that time which translate to this, descriptions of nature often leaving one breathless at the skill and deep emotion she reveals seemingly so simply. A theme it shares with A Room Made of Leaves is colonization and the exploitation of the indigenous people. The slipping of the mask gave me a way to sneak in behind the myth and explore something more interesting, and possibly more true. But, like most historical fiction, it starts in the same place history does: in the record of the past left to us in documents, oral traditions, buildings, landscapes and objects.
