Description

The author becomes an expert at plant identification and knows the trails so well he could navigate them with his eyes closed.

He knows he can stay in the forest and die with his friends – or he can leave, and speak their truth to a human world that desperately needs to hear it. Charles Foster’s Being a Beast saw him live like a range of creatures, from otters and swifts, in a tragicomical rejoinder to the challenge thrown out by philosophers: “What is it like to be …” Such books are encounters, more than anything else, with sentience. He spends a good portion of the book moralising about human misbehaviour and mistreatment of nature (which obviously isn’t totally incorrect), but that is somewhat undermined by the hypocrisy and total lack of nuance / painting all of humanity except himself with the poison apple brush. What I think was missing from the novel was the author’s decision to exclude personal details from his past in a more detailed way.I recently read and devoured Geoffroy Delorme's Deer Man: Seven Years of Living in the Wild, which now ranks among the best books in this genre that I've read in ages. And it is also one of those books that make me want to go and study ecology or get to know and work with plants and animals. But we are spared the true privations he must have endured: Delorme is both stoical and tight-lipped. Delorme attributes feelings to his friends as he witnesses their various experiences and it is these, their emotional responses to life alongside their curiosity, that most encourages the reader to see the roe deer as persons.

Adapted with permission of the publisher from the book Deer Man written by Geoffroy Delorme and published by Greystone Books in September 2022. I love that he made a connection with the deer but on their own terms and never with the intention of taming them to humans. In the winters of 2015, Jacob took a break from his busy and noisy life by visiting his parents in America.

There’s a dreamy moment halfway through Geoffroy Delorme’s brief, sensuous book in which one of the young deer he gets to know curls up beside him, its head resting on his leg.

I revelled at the author’s descriptions of the woods, and admired his desire to know every part of it. My only critique was that the ending/resolution to book was very quick and I felt I could have used more information.

Eventually, Delorme recognizes individual deer and they become characters in their own right: a deer named Star giving birth is cause for exhilaration, and when she’s shot by hunters, it’s a haunting moment of loss. Or something else weird happened but we’ll never know because he offers absolutely no meaningful explanation for how or why he ended up in, survived or left this situation. What we are left with is a startling portrait of an animal that is both familiar to us and yet shockingly misunderstood.
