When I first had a need for a laptop shelf in the year 2000, I searched and couldn’t find anything on the market so I bought materials and started to build Version 1 as can be seen here: https://youtu.be/RYzeIt-HlEs The MagBench Standard is designed for laptop computers and for use with applications that require extra space for tools and test instruments. With the unique design of Gray Marine board and Stainless Steel hardware, it can handle those tough tasks in all-weather conditions. The Standard version is also incredibly strong and it can support up to 50 lbs. The MagBench Standard Workstation can be installed on any steel surface in seconds with just two simple steps; place the MagBench Workstation against the steel surface and fold down the front panel. It’s that easy!

For the other RV windows I just fold the flap up from the outside and place (not tape) magnets on each to hold the flap up either full open (winter), half open (spring, summer) or remove magnets for full closed (when its supper hot). I use 1/16″ on both sides since the magnets have to attract through the reflectix. The holes were cut only to lighten the weight. The laptop with cables just barely fit on the shelf and 1” deeper and wider would be better. Note holes on right side for screwdrivers etc. This DIY Portable Magnetic Laptop Shelf (Laptop Work Station) was designed to be light and compact for easy transport for field use in the elevator industry (IUEC). The new MagBench Utility version is designed with two large holes for drills, wrenches and large tools and six smaller holes to hold screw drivers and other hand tools. There is also a recessed area in the center to retain screws fittings and other hardware. UtiliShelf® in the Field UtiliShelf® works for every industry that demands workers be sent out into the field. From electric metering to oil rigs – and beyond – here are some of the ways our customers are using UtiliShelf® : Portable Desk & Writing Station: Because when you’re in the field, you don’t have a desk. Portable Magnetic Tool & Testing Station: UtiliShelf® can hold up to 15 pounds of tools and testing equipment, while being light enough to grab and go. Portable Computer Workstation: No, there isn’t an app for that. Sometimes you just need a computer in the field. And UtiliShelf® provides a great, productive space for it.

I use this Portable Laptop Shelf also as a Utility Shelf to hold prints, manuals. When troubleshooting an elevator I don’t need the extra aggravation of having to hold the laptop and prints. Hey Kevin, how is version 3 coming along? I can’t imagine what your plans are for making it “thinner, lighter and more compact.” I’ve been a lurker for a while as I was going to make my own invention just as you have done, but you have done a ton of the trial and error as well research into making your shelf. After researching all sorts of board options (too much research), I found cutting boards to be the simplest and best option. I also use these as panels to mount electronics. Service Manual Holder Along with writing you can also hold service manuals weighing up to 15 pounds. Setup the station, open your service manual and you’ll be productive in moments. And you can set it up right where you’re working. As long as there’s a vertical metal surface that is 16 gauge or heavier.

I have a newer model that is better and easier to build though. See short demo here: https://www.kevingittemeier.com/totalelement-magnets/ The Omnishelf is the ultimate magnetic workstation, and the only one of its kind built to give techs a mobile workstation that can accommodate all of their tools, and meet all of their needs. I have always had deep admiration for people like my supervisor who didn’t need manuals or prints when in the field. This post is Version 2 build. I thought the HDPE would be a little too saggy. By durable I guess you mean pulling out the hinge bolts...maybe. Hardwood might be a little bit brittle and warp. Well, our local Australian hardwoods would certainly warp that wide and thin. If the HDPE works well, great. Edit Note, ok so I built some more variations to compare and maybe I will sell off the extras but they won’t be cheap because I’m not cheap! Testing Station With the UtiliShelf®, you can setup a testing station just about anywhere. Attach the UtiliShelf® to a vertical metal surface and you’ve got a solid and stable testing station. Wait till you see Version 3, it’ll be like the iPhone, too thin & compact. Laptop Shelf in Laptop Bag What about Version 3? Magnetic Laptop Version 3 will put Versions 1 and 2 to shame. It will be more than than just a Laptop Shelf or Utility Shelf yet Version 3 will be thinner, lighter and more compact. I like to use these cutting boards because they are light weight, inexpensive, durable, readily available and most of all suite the task perfectly. Simple Inexpensive DIY Prototype Portable Magnetic Laptop Computer Shelf (V1R1). Compact Portable Laptop Shelf The Mainstay Cutting Board has a recessed top and flat bottom. You can chose to face either side up and I have done both. After using both I preferred the recessed side up to better hold material including hardware, pens , flashlights etc.

The key to Version 2 is the low profile hinges and the magnet configuration. I will explain the science behind the magnet config in a future update but its important to do the magnets exactly as I have, alternating the poles. I glued them on the first prototype then mechanicaly fastened (bolted some, screwed others) and glued on following models as can be seen in this video: https://youtu.be/RYzeIt-HlEsOmnishelf isn’t just a beautiful and unique-looking briefcase; it’s a magnetic shelf for laptops, tools, and important documents. Effectively, it’s a mobile desk solution for technicians in all industries that gives technicians a workspace wherever they are. A wooden board would look very nice and work well but not ideal for a hard use application in the field like I use mine. I have thought about making a nice wooden one just as an example though and posting video and pics. Portable Magnetic Tool & Testing Station: UtiliShelf® can hold up to 15 pounds of tools and testing equipment, while being light enough to grab and go. I wanted the holes tight enough that the bolts would actually thread into the boards so I used a 9/64″ drill bit which is smaller than 4mm. 9/64″ = 3.571mm. This just gives a tighter, more solid build and eliminates the chance of the bolt heads pulling through the board. If you drill a big sloppy hole and countersink too deep, it can happen. I personally have never drilled too deep in a big sloppy hole. Countersink/Drill Bit Combo for M4 Bolt heads Countersink Bit for M4 Bolt holes
