I would love to have a version of this book that is slight more general, without gendered parents for example to make sure all children could relate better to it if needed, but even so I think it's a great one. Divorce is an unhappy fact that affects many children's lives; parents who are divorcing will value this story that can be read to their children, its message one of comfort to help soothe and make them aware that their parents' separation is in no way their fault.

On its own terms, it's an ideal book, but it's not a picture book for general reading - not that it aims to be. It might be an obvious metaphor, but it perfectly captures the feelings that children might be having, without being melodramatic or scary. However by removing the crack later in the story but still having the same whole page illustrations provides a key visual message that in time the situation does heal. Its about him understanding that sometimes things are out of his control and instead of him blaming himself and trying to fix it, he instead accepts it even if it does still hurt.If you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of yourself or children in your care, you should always consult an appropriate healthcare professional. Having personally used this book to communicate divorce with younger family members, it is definitely a book I would recommend to any teacher etc! Reinforces the view that the child is not to blame and will continued to be loved as before, and sometimes it is not possible to 'fix' a problem. The moral of this story is that it is not anyones fault his parents have fallen out of love with each other, and it doesn't mean they have fallen any less out of love with him. Even if a child has been raised by a single parent, their parents split before they were born for example, they could still benefit from a book like this.

The illustrations and rhymes are lighthearted and make the book feel very accessible for adults and children. The illustrations were very detailed and used warm toned colours which was quite effective in making me feel comforted whilst reading it. This book is written as a poem and is a lovely way to help children and make them aware of marriage break-ups between their parents and that there are ways of coping and that it will all be alright. In the second half of the book, where the main character realizes that it is ok and that hearts cannot be put back together with glue the images are no longer broken.
