Description

Santorini, or Thira to use its official name, is part of the Cyclades islands. It sits in the Aegean Sea almost halfway between Athens and Crete. Santorini suffered a huge volcanic explosion around 1500 BC. The eruption, probably the largest the Earth has seen in the last few thousand years, completely destroyed the centre of the island which sank into the Aegean. Santorini is excellent for couples, honeymooners, vow renewal, and proposing to your significant other, thanks to its stellar and romantic sunset vistas of the Caldera settlements. Actually, most lodgings offer honeymoon suites and special arrangements for newlyweds. Is Santoriniwindy? One of the most breath-taking memories I have of Santorini is without a doubt the incredible sunsets you get to experience as you look out over the Aegean Sea.As such, it’s only fitting to book a sunset cruiseto end your Santorini days off the best way possible. Santorini is still an active volcano today and you can visit the volcanic island of Nea Kameni in the centre of the island and see the hot smoke and swim in the hot springs. The caldera offers the most dramatic sea views you have ever seen, while the enormous cliffs are dotted with lovely Cycladic whitewashed houses!

The caldera hike from Fira to Oia is the most popular hike you’ll do in Santorini. It follows the caldera’s edge with sweeping views over the island and the volcano. It’s an easy 10 kilometers (6 miles), but you’ll want to give yourself time to stop and enjoy the viewpoints. Much of the trail is cobblestone or sidewalk, however, there are narrow dirt sections as well as some small elevation gains. Budget at least three hours for the hike and bring sunscreen and water as it’s completely exposed. 5. Visit the Akrotiri Lighthouse Gorgeous Santorini is one of the best-loved travel destinations in Greece, and for good reason. Conquer the infamous Fira to Oia hike, have a fresh seafood lunch at Ammoudi Bay, and relax on the majestic beaches.Scooter/Quad rentals– There are lots of scooter and quad rental shops in Santorini. Rentals start from 17 EUR per day in the off-season for scooters and 30 EUR per day for an ATV. In the peak season, scooter rentals start from 22 EUR and ATVs from 45 EUR. Enrol on one of the many culinary classes on offer and learn to make Santorini’s rich and varied delicacies, such as tomato fritters, sfougato, melitinia and sweet koufeto. You can fly directly to Santorini’s international airport from many European countries, like France, Germany, Spain, the UK, and others. No directflights to Santorini from North America are available, though. Learn more about the flights. How to get from Athens to Santorini? You can recreate these at home too and they are relatively simple to make. However, arguably the sweet, delicious tomatoes grown in Santorini’s volcanic soil are what make the tomatokeftedes here so special. Fava bean puree hails from here too

Another enchanting sight that Santorini displays is the architecture of the villages, built right on the edge of the caldera. Those picturesque villages distinguish for their sugar-cube houses, paved streets, wonderful churches, and, most of all, the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. In fact, the incredible architecture of the island makes it a convenient location for parkour, a new impressive sport. From Oia, you will enjoy the most romantic sunset ever, with the orange sun dipping into the sea. Due to this unique atmosphere, the island has become a popular wedding and, at the same time, honeymoon destination. Where is Santorini? Santorini is situated in the south Aegean Sea, south of Athens and the Greek mainland. Bus– Buses are the best option for getting around Santorini, with prices ranging from 1.60-3 EUR depending on where you’re going. Fira to Oia is 2.30 EUR, while Fira to Perissa is 2.20 EUR. Perissa to the port is 1.60 EUR. In three parts, each set in a different living situation, British naturalist Gerald Durrell gives the reader an autobiographical account of the childhood years he spent with his family on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. As you start in Fira you will make your way through Firostefani, Imerovigli and then onto Oia. This is a great way to explore each village, the architecture and take in the incredible views along the way.

It is part of the Cyclades archipelago which is made up of approximately 220 islands. It is 200km south of Athens and it is relatively easy to get from Athens to Santorini (and vice versa). You can opt to do so via ferry from Piraeus or by plane. What is the meaning of “Oia” and “Fira”? Facts about SantoriniIt is believed that Santorini has been inhabited since the neolithic period. In other words, humans have lived here since approximately 10,000–4,500 BC! Either they are doing evil deeds to try and stay afloat, or they are suffering from the actions of such people.

The last eruption of Santorini’s volcano was in 1950 and that was only minor. Is the Santorini volcano likely to erupt again? If you’re an inexperienced driver, you may want to pass on the scooter/quad rental. Locals zip around chaotically and the hairpin turns and hills sometimes make for dangerous driving. The population of Santorini is approximately 15,500 permanent residents, while 2 million visitorsarrive at the island every year. If you opt to do the hike in full, you will walk approximately 6 miles. Along the way, you will pass through quaint villages, past vineyards, and through ethereal landscapes that almost look otherworldly. Why are the houses white? – This is a fact about Santorini that most people don’t know. The iconic whitewashed buildings of the Cyclades and Santorini have become instantly recognisable as Greek. But why? One reason is because it made the houses cooler! White paint absorbs less heat than darker colours, making the hot Greek summers more bearable (pre air conditioning days).
