One of the greatest crimes in History made into an eternal document through masterful technique, blending personal experience, reportage, survivor testimonies, and so on. May such books never have to be written. But within ten days the Nazis had begun their campaign of murdering every Jew, and many others, in the city. The massacre at Babyn Yar was one of many mass shootings perpetrated by the Nazi Germans beginning in 1941. It was also one of the largest mass killings at a single location during World War II. In the two years that followed, Ukrainians, Russians, Gypsies and people of all nationalities were murdered in Babi Yar. The belief that Babi Yar is an exclusively Jewish grave is wrong... It is an international grave. Nobody will ever determine how many and what nationalities are buried there, because 90% of the corpses were burned, their ashes were scattered in ravines and fields. If on 29 September and 30 September 1941 Babi Yar may happen and the world did not react seriously, dramatically, abnormally, maybe this was a good test for him. So a few weeks later in January 1942, near Berlin in Wannsee, a convention can be held with a decision, a final solution to the Jewish problem... Maybe if the very action had been a serious one, a dramatic one, in September 1941 here in Ukraine, the Wannsee Conference would have come to a different end, maybe. [62]

He does this through the lives of his mother, grandmother, grandfather (‘Gramps’) and his cat, Titus, throughout the occupation. Anatoli describes his family: “That’s the sort of people we were before the arrival of the Nazis and of the war in general: quite unimportant, not liable for military service, elderly people, a woman and a little boy – the sort of people, in short, who want the war least of all and who nevertheless seem to suffer most from it.” It tells the story of the Nazi occupation of Kiev from the point of view of the author, who does his best to recapture his 12-year-old innocence (hiding with his cat in the bomb shelter, the joy he takes in joining in the looting, or collecting spent artillery shells with his friends) and how that innocence is lost over the following 778 days. It is a very human story of an inhuman struggle. Leomie Anderson flaunts her jaw-dropping figure in a skimpy metallic co-ord as she joins chic Vogue Williams at swanky H&M bashIn the early 1960s, the authorities even decided to fill the ravine with a mixture of water and mud, causing a disaster when a collapsed dike set off a landslide, killing dozens. Under the Stalinist dictatorship of the countries constituting the USSR, artists and writers had to glorify the military/police state. This book exposed the fear that Stalinists had of any opposition to their version of the truth. Titus the cat: Anatoly's pet cat. Titus survives the war even after attempts on his life are made by Fyodor and the German army. Titus was a companion to Anatoly in their homemade shelters. Anatoli documents the occupation of Kiev by the Nazis, the subsequent liberation by the Red Army, and the attempt to erase all memory of the mass murders.

In the uncensored version, Kuznetsov is even-handed in the horrors he describes – the terrible cruelty of the Germans and their Ukrainian auxiliaries, the awful treatment of Jews by some Ukrainians, and the history of the Soviet (and effectively Russian) suppression of Ukraine under Stalin and his predecessors. He even meets a few kind Germans. He describes how his grandfather initially welcomed the Germans – as did many Ukrainians. Anything would be better than Soviet rule, and the Germans at first claimed to support Ukrainian nationalism. But Ukrainians soon turned against them when the realities of Nazi rule became obvious.

But he secretly kept the original, written from his journals documenting the horrors he witnessed from the age of 12, and buried it in the ground for fear of the KGB searching his home and seizing it.As a historian of the Holocaust in Ukraine and the author of the recently published In the Midst of Civilized Europe: The Pogroms of 1918–1921 and the Onset of the Holocaust, I have sought to fill in some of these silences by speaking and writing about the atrocities that took place. He dubs it 'a document in the form of a novel' — and would that it were a piece of fiction. But, as he writes emphatically at the start, 'this book contains nothing but the truth'.
