There are many ways to focus calibrate a lens to the 1D Mark III, but they all have the same goal - find the sharpest setting for the combo. I used a Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS Lens most extensively during testing but also noticed the problem with a

What I don't love as much is the difficulty I am presented with when selecting keepers from my take-home.The heart of the EOS 1D is the sensor, a CCD. For those that haven’t shot on a CCD (as most of the market soon after the 1D went to CMOS), it is a sensor that is as beautiful as it is unforgiving. In many ways, shooting to an early CCD chip is like shooting chrome film. You get only a few functional stops of dynamic range, but the ones you have are nothing less than stunning. It is sharp, colors are punchy, and it can flash sync up to 1/500 of a second. However, like exposure, you have to be extremely careful to nail white balance, especially when photographing orange train engines as the orange in some images will shoot true, while with others it will drift towards red. Get the balance correct and you will be rewarded with images that hold up to any modern-day cameras, but at significantly less resolution. I'll gladly trade my 45 selectable points for the more-sensitive 19 (the older 45 point AF clustered its cross-type focus points around the center point as seen above). New drive design. If the electrical engineers had a hard time boosting the electrical and computational throughput of the Mark III, that was nothing compared to what the mechanical guys (and gals, presumably) had to do to get the mirror to slam up and down fast enough without destroying itself or the camera, and to get the shutter to be able to fire and reset fast enough. It'd take a lot more than the paragraph or so we have here to describe all they did, but their approach had three main elements:

Banding noise in the EOS-1D Mark III has been lowered by the equivalent of one stop, also relative to the EOS-1D Mark II/EOS-1D Mark II N. Improved sensor layout, for higher "fill factor," and thereby better light sensitivity. Fill factor refers to the percentage of each pixelSorry - I don't have a 1D Mark II or IIN right now, but the high ISO noise from these bodies are very similar to that from the 1Ds II This feature is similar to what is available on point and shoot digital cameras - you see the 100% image preview on your LCD - before you take the picture.
