In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War. That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump. In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future. This collection of volumes ends on one hell of a cliffhanger. Volume 39 couldn't have ended on a more important place in the story, coming to a close just as one of the two major character arc is going to climax.Now I'm just miffed that I'm probably having to wait a couple of years (or more) before the next omnibus is released. And after that the heroes finally arrive at the elf island and we get a healthy dose of lore explanation. The Roar of the Astral World was the event we witnessed in the previous Deluxe volume. By tearing open a portal the world has been forever transformed into Fantasia, a land where the astral plane and the physical plane overlap and have become one. By withholding this information for so many chapters, and by only explaining it briefly by wise and ancient characters, Berserk maintains this air of mystery and lends credence and weight to it's fantasy universe. I think this series continues to impress me with how thoughtful and interesting it's world building is. Guts finally managed to bring traumatized Casca to Elfhelm to restore her sanity but the question haunts him if restoring her sanity and the idea of an ideal Casca would be her wish as well. After having suffered a crushing trauma at Griffith's hands Casca reverted to a childlike persona, no longer the fierce commander Guts loved. Being a child (mentally) shields her from really coping but Guts cannot accept that he lost her so you could say that he is being selfish in his need to restore her as she once was. However, I would not call his stubbornness to let go of the memory of their happiness wrong. Even if she does not want to face her traumas and restore her sanity it is what she needs. None of us would wish to be "left alone" while internally needing help and I believe that Casca will grow to accept her past and be grateful to Guts in the end. It kinda reminds me of the movie "Vertigo" where the main character desperately wishes to revive his fallen lover, no matter the cost. After all, why not? Absolutely heart broken by new of the authors passing, but so grateful his friend is able to continue the manga on and give us the ending of this epic saga. I'd love to see a duel between Johan Liebert (Monster) and Griffith, it'd be a battle of wits to be sure. :D

We've already seen a glimpse of Griffith's legendary metropolis Falconia in Volume 12 but in this volume, we are shown in detail its bustling streets, impressive Romanesque architecture, perfectly organized city administration and very satisfied citizens. After all, they were saved by Griffith from a horde of monsters who appeared out of nowhere and are given bountiful lands to reap and sow, not to mention comfortable housing and safety. Two more volumes left, which will fit one more deluxe as number 14. And then perhaps the continuation by Kentaro’s grind. Being that Berserk was my introduction to manga, I’ve been spoiled. I can now understand why so many hold this as their favorite piece of story ever written. It has every element of life in it, and now the death of Kentaro hits even harder because of the ending to this beautiful lead up. I haven't reviewed Berserk volumes for some time but now that I've reached the end of available volumes to read, I decided to put some thoughts on paper, so to say. I'll focus on a couple of notable plot points I found intriguing or in some way inspiring. If you don't mind the length, read on. :) Kentarou Miura ( 三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.Griffith's rise to power is nothing short of Machiavellian. Before he turned into the God Hand (godlike entity, neither angel nor devil), his human ambition was thwarted so now, in his second attempt, some careful planning was needed. How do you subject most of the country's citizens to your absolute rule and most importantly, make them love and worship you? First, use already existing conflicts (or create them) with other nations to help your would-be citizens to defeat them and thus appear as their savior from bondage. Second, show them a prophetic revelation where you will lead humankind out of darkness, sprinkled with some glamour miracles. Thirdly, gather the stubborn, traditional nobility on your side by seducing and marrying the country's princess, the symbol of old royalty. As for the more religious human element, put some thoughts in the weak Pope's head and turn the Church on your side. Lastly, you do not want your citizens to scatter outside of your rule, they have to depend on you. So, for good measure, release monsters in the world so the only safe place for humans to live would be your lovely city Falconia, equipped with all an average commoner would want. Now that all the bases are covered the people can no longer venture outside Falconia safely and the only thing guarding them against Griffith's bloodthirsty troops is the ruler's good will. Citizens are happy for now but is it happiness to lose your freedom to live and struggle on your terms, in a much larger world? All things considered, they are now serving one man's ruthless ambitions so being free but a poor struggler is still a better option. Griffith promised to have his kingdom and he did, taking a different path than Guts did to obtain it. While Griffith sold his soul to obtain his version of utopia, Guts did the same with embarking on a journey and building a circle of people that selflessly helped one another. I feel as if Guts’s version of a kingdom was that much more benevolent and rich. Inner growth and spiritual growth is the key to life. Kentaro paints this visual of a beautiful exterior (Griffith) with a horrible interior, and this rugged battered exterior (Guts) having a genuine interior. Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1] Berserk has always delivered everything and more to satisfy both the sadistic psycho part or me and the romantic fantasy lover. The pacing of this book seems a bit faster then the previous ones, but it didn’t distract too much from the story. Recognizing the self growth in Guts was also endearing. The ability to go from the worst of misfortunes into a selfless man, showcasing loyalty and dedication in helping someone he loves.

This is the last one so far, so I wanna write something. I'll try to shroud it in shadows, so I don't spoil much. Berserk's primary antagonist, Griffith, seized total power over the remaining world populace using various schemes, military victories and supposed "miracles", granted to him by his title of the inhuman God Hand. Humans are gathered in his newly created mythical city, named after him of course, where they are to spend their lives living safely, or so it seems. This was FANTASTIC!!! Berserk has already implemented itself as my favorite series of all time! This book just added to it. And then, of course, Kentaro Miura tragically passed away in 2021 at the age of 54, partway through the completion of volume 41.
