Park JY, Lee YN, Kobayashi Y, Jacobs LL, Barsbold R, Lee HJ, Kim N, Song KY, Polcyn MJ (2021). "A new ankylosaurid from the Upper Cretaceous Nemegt Formation of Mongolia and implications for paleoecology of armoured dinosaurs". Scientific Reports. 11 (1): Article number 22928. Bibcode: 2021NatSR..1122928P. doi: 10.1038/s41598-021-02273-4. PMC 8616956. PMID 34824329. The Parasaurolophus in Jurassic Park: The Game appears to have been based on several Parasaur designs that were never seen physically in the films. They have bright yellow skin much like one of the Parasaurolophus maquettes made for The Lost World: Jurassic Park and the front half of the crest is red just like the lone Parasaurolophus walkeri seen on one of the murals of the Jurassic Park Visitors' Centre. The endorsement team saw a herd of Parasaurolophus at the Watering Hole of the Brachiosaurus Enclosure once they arrived on Isla Nublar. [4] An alternate opening to The Lost World: Jurassic Park was for a Japanese fishing boat to pull up a Parasaurolophus carcass in its net, to which the net breaks from the weight of the carcass and disappears into the waters below. [22] Paul Mejias supervised the construction of this sculpture [23] and even though this alternate opening scene never made the final cut, the eighteen-foot carcass was still used in the film in the scenes taking place in the Tyrannosaurus nest and the boneyard. [24] It was later repainted for Jurassic Park III [25] to represent the carcass that the T. rex was eating. [26]

Structurally similar to Sharpey's fibres, they were embedded directly into the bone tissue, a feature unique to ankylosaurids. This would have provided the ankylosaurids with an armor covering that was both lightweight and highly durable, being resistant to breakage and penetration by the teeth of predators. [33] The palpebral bones over the eyes may have provided additional protection for them. [34] Carpenter suggested in 1982 that the heavily vascularized armor may also have had a role in thermoregulation as in modern crocodilians. [35] When Roland and Ajay entered the T-Rex nest a dead Parasaurolophus was spotted and was probably one of the big predatores earlier victims. Thulborn, T. (1993). "Mimicry in ankylosaurid dinosaurs". Records of the South Australian Museum. 27: 151–58. They had a wide range of territory on the island. In the east, they coexisted with Gallimimus, Pachycephalosaurus, and Mamenchisaurus. [3] In the west, they lived alongside with Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops, later even forming mixed herds with the related hadrosaur Corythosaurus. [5]According to sound designer Al Nelson in Jurassic World, the vocals for the Ankylosaurs were recorded from sea lions. In season 5, Dr. Turner observed the herd of Parasaurolophus who had never seen anything like it. As a result of this behavior, the herd of Parasaurolophus showed signs of protecting eldery members by finding small land around each other to hide from predators, such as Baryonyx. The tail club of Ankylosaurus seems to have been an active defensive weapon, capable of producing enough of an impact to break the bones of an assailant. The tendons of the tail were partially ossified and were not very elastic, allowing great force to be transmitted to the club when it was used as a weapon. [10] Coombs suggested in 1979 that several hindlimb muscles would have controlled the swinging of the tail, and that violent thrusts of the club would have been able to break the metatarsal bones of large theropods. [30] Restoration of Ankylosaurus displaying its tail club

Coombs, W. (1978). "Forelimb muscles of the Ankylosauria (Reptilia, Ornithischia)". Journal of Paleontology. 52 (3): 642–57. JSTOR 1303969. According to Carpenter, the shape of the nasal chambers of Ankylosaurus indicate that airflow was unidirectional (looping through the lungs during inhalation and exhalation), although it may also have been bidirectional in the posterior nasal chamber, with air directed past the olfactory lobes. [10] The enlarged olfactory region of ankylosaurids indicates a well-developed sense of smell. [28] Though hindwards retraction of the nostrils is seen in aquatic animals and animals with a proboscis, it is unlikely either possibility applies to Ankylosaurus, as the nostrils tend to be reduced or the premaxilla extended. In addition, though the widely separated nostrils may have allowed for stereo-olfaction (where each nostril senses smells from different directions), as has been proposed for the moose, little is known about this feature. [12] The position of the orbits of Ankylosaurus suggest some stereoscopic vision. Oddly, the section "Exploring Jurassic Park Part 2" of the Topps comic Jurassic Park II and the Jurassic Park Topps card for Parasaurolophus states that it was cut from Jurassic Park [21] [17] even though a herd can be seen at the Watering Hole with Brachiosaurus. A herd is later seen at the Department of Prehistoric Wildlife's relocation facility alongside a baby Nasutoceratops, a Stegosaurus and Rexy. Later at night, several Parasaurolophus were drinking in a river alongside Iguanodon and Triceratops only to be scared by some falling burning Giant Locusts caused by Lewis Dodgson. He soon evacuate the dinosaurs at its headquarters after the insects caused a forest fire. It is likely that the hadrosaur now live free in the wild or continue to thrive at the sanctuary which is now global. At the very end of the film, the Parasaurolophus and wild horses can be seen running alongside each other.

Notable Individuals

During the events of 2022, several of these hadrosaurs were captured and transferred to the Biosyn Sanctuary, where they can be studied. A herd of original and accurate Parasaurolophus were running threw the snowy field in Sierra Nevada, chased by Owen and his DFW guys riding on the horse, leading them to the sanctuary. One of them escape the herd, leading to Owen being on a course and eventually capture it, allowing Owen to touch its face and tell him that everything will be okay and that he will be fine. As Owen, Shep and Rosa herded the Parasaur, they are confronted by Rainn Delacourt, disguised as a DFW officer and showing a fake badge, and accused of illegal poaching. Owen eventually gave in after a gun confrontation and handed the dinosaur to Delacourt. [14] Fossils of Ankylosaurus are rare in the sediments it is known from, and the distribution of its remains suggests that it was ecologically rare, or restricted to the uplands of the formations, where it would have been less likely to fossilize, rather than the coastal lowlands. Another ankylosaur, a nodosaur referred to as Edmontonia sp., is also found in the same formations, but according to Carpenter, the range of the two genera does not seem to have overlapped. Their remains have so far not been found in the same localities, and the nodosaur appears to have inhabited the lowlands. The narrower muzzle of the nodosaur suggests it had a more selective diet than Ankylosaurus, further indicating ecological separation, whether their range overlapped or not. [12] [10] Arbour, V.
