Description

However, a mining accident that buries some of the children including Nura’s best friend Faisal shifts her desperation into finding him. My final thought when turning the last page is that I wish there’d been a book like this when I was younger.

Khan weaves a magical tale brimming with themes of friendship, family, and hope - interspersed with delicious foods and enthralling lore. Nura is determined to find a special treasure known as the Demon’s Tongue which is rumoured to be hidden in the mines.

From the start of the book Nura’s mother is very forward thinking and keen for her daughter not to work but to have an education. It pits ignorance and education against greed for money and finer things in a world where exploiters reign. Jinns are essentially spirits and tricksters but as Nura finds out that not all jinns are scary and some are good.

I won’t get into spoilers so the only thing I will say is that a lot of the circumstances are very similar to our world. Other great adventure and fantasy books for ages 9+ in a similar vein include; Rebel Skies, Legendarium, The Secret Wild, The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne, and Oddity.

Nura and the Immortal Palace is magical, atmospheric and fun - whilst never losing sight of its important themes of child poverty and exploitation.

This book was so fun and creepy, and I really loved the way it handled the very difficult issue of child labour, which is something I've actually never read about in a book.I’ll be getting it for my brother, so he can see the suffering of children in many parts of the world while also experiencing a great adventure where kids like him are heroes.
