People were actually making a point of it, including stopping my wife on her way into the venue to say how great it sounded. But you have to deal with those people when playing small venues, so understanding and empathy go a long way in making them work for you rather than against you. The pop screen extends down almost half of the microphone, which should also aid in keeping vocalists’ hands in the proper position. The SR314 has perfect clarity and smoothness making it easy for it to cut in a mix and sit on top without overpowering any other elements in the mix. The sonic character embodies the amazing speed, clarity and definition that EW is so famous for; but there is something very special about this mic.

One glance at the SR314 won't be enough for most people, in fact, because this is a stunningly good-looking microphone. The supplied frequency plot shows a polar pattern that is impressively consistent through the entire spectrum: it's almost perfectly cardioid at 400Hz and 6kHz, with a small rear pickup lobe developing between these points and a slightly greater tendency towards omnidirectionality from 12kHz upwards.

It can accept sound pressure levels of up to 145dB, though Earthworks don't state what level of distortion is reached at that point, and sensitivity is a comfortable 10mV/Pa. An extended flat frequency response and a focus on fast clean impulse response set the Earthworks SR314 apart. Overall, I’d classify the polar pattern to be very tight, and the off-axis rejection to be excellent. The high-quality small diaphragm cardioid condenser capsule is coupled with a Class A amplifier circuit and housed in a steel exoskeleton.

Sculpted of stainless steel, this mic is sleek, remains balanced in the hand, and is sensibly engineered for life on the road. I see no other reason for the hiss that happens in either a power amp plugged into a passive speaker, or an active speaker when turned up, even though the input is at line-level, and either nothing is plugged into it, or a perfectly-working XLR cable is plugged from the input to a mixer that is turned off. it seems it's something in the midrange that makes it butter smooth on my vocals, and it seems that it have a lot more proximity effect. Andertons Music Company is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, firm registration number 716155. The SR314 features a distinct, tapered housing with a brushed-silver finish that somehow makes it look retro and contemporary at the same time (the microphone is also available in a black finish with stainless screens, or black finish with black screens).A highpass filter on the SR314 set to a frequency of 160 Hz helped but did not cure the problem, and we had to swap it out for a different microphone. It looks great on stage, and every musician I put it in front of was excited to sing into it, which says a lot. It feels very balanced and solid in the hands, and the resilient stainless steel is a great choice to withstand the abuse of touring.

I've been looking into some higher-end mics for live ambient minimalistic music where tons of details in the vocals matter a lot. This microphone provides uncoloured rejection of sounds off-axis and yields more gain before feedback than conventional vocal microphones. During our first gig with this mic (at our home venue Archie's Seabreeze in Fort Pierce, FL) many of our local fans came up and complimented us on our sound this night with many asking "what are you doing different? unless of course you're doing something wrong - and i haven't come into the situation in which i couldn't get phantom power in more than 30 years!

I’m a fan of the stainless steel aesthetic; it seems to hold up against fingerprints surprisingly well, keeping it looking clean and shiny with minimal effort. Especially in a vocal/guitar setup, having the voice sound as great as it can is worth every penny IMHO.

I haven't done a big band on stage with it so I don't know how it holds up in terms of feedback with a drummer plus percussionist right behind you.
