The Te-Rain – Part 2, “Now Victoria’s a wonderful old engine…” Or, ‘How do you solve a problem like Victoria?’ Donald F. Featherstone (1973). Colonial small wars, 1837-1901. David & Charles. p.9. ISBN 0715357115 . Retrieved 5 April 2011.

It (killing/fighting) proves that I am a true Moslem. That I care enough to fight and maybe even to die for my faith. For a country that will be all Moslem and I will belong there. Are you capable of understanding that? Regiment, originally raised at Karachi in 1843 as the Scinde Camel Corps, and redesignated Punjab Infantry in 1853. [84] Cape Fear", so this material was thankfully in very safe hands. The photography from Geoffrey Unsworth is top notch, barren and desolate landscapes beautifully realising the peril of the passengers' journey, whilst the music from Mischa Spoliansky leaves a lasting impression. The locomotive, or rather, locomotives, depict the Empress of India, affectionately referred to as “Victoria”, a once fine, but now elderly and neglected locomotive. Her coach, abandoned as unserviceable, seems of equal antiquity.

Effective portrayal of opposing views - the gullible British lady, Mrs. Wyndham commenting that peoples not under the British Empire were uncivilized and the extremely polarized view of the cynical Indian journalist who opposes killing in theory. The movie brings out the sentiments from both sides. Also well done was the scene of a train massacre in showing the courage of Ms Wyatt to walk among the slain and save a young child that was still alive.

Revolt in Waziristan

Mr. Van Leyden is the one postcolonial voice in the cast. When the British leader of the expedition, the daring Captain Scott (Kenneth More), dismisses the rebels as children, a standard colonial trope, Van Leyden retorts that they are grown men – uneducated, yes, but men nonetheless. Van Leyden represents the educated, privileged elite of colonized nations, who were proud of their nation but had also absorbed colonial critiques of it. The character has several good lines in the movie, but unfortunately his ideas are all discredited by his revelation as the villain. Here we come to one of the film’s essential railway improbabilities, that this humble 0-6-0T is a neglected relic with a once glorious past. The movie is beautifully filmed, with great vistas of wilderness and excellent colour. Train-spotters will enjoy the railway details. One crucial difference between this film and Ice Cold in Alex is that in North West Frontier, the characters are actually fleeing ‘British’ territory – they are escaping part of the British Empire over which control has been lost. This may not be intentionally symbolic on the part of the filmmakers since it goes completely unremarked and unexamined. This simple fact, however, seems very revealing at a time when decolonisation was beginning in earnest.

The South Waziristan Militia, then: The South Waziristan Scouts. HQ: (Militia): Wana, then (Scouts): Jandola. In many ways the Te-rain is the star of the 1959 film, North West Frontier. As Paul/Dzine pointed out in his article, the train starts out in India, running on metre gauge, and continues on a broader gauge in Spain, matters not hitherto noticed by Yours Truly. Victoria [the train Victoria] is old, I confess that. But she has experience and when she has experience, nothing can go wrong.Like many things British, the development of the units of Scouts into the Frontier Corps was organic, unplanned and initially unsystematic. It began, in the British manner, as an improvisation to meet a need; it was maintained because it guaranteed certain unique skills at an acceptable price (the great Empire may have vaunted its 'pomp and circumstance' to wow the impressionable, but behind the scenes the deciding factor was often simply the acceptability or otherwise to HM Treasury) and only then was the principle regularised, standardised and systemised (cf. the development of the Frontier Force, from irregulars to a corps d'elite). J. Lee Thompson's enjoyably imperialist if dated adventure appeared, from a creative point of view, at the most successful period of his variable 40-year career. Between 1957 and 1962 he directed such striking films as Woman In A Dressing Gown, Ice Cold In Alex and Tiger Bay, before concluding a continuous good run with The Guns Of Navarone and Cape Fear. Squeezed between Alex and Navarone, North West Frontier (aka: Flame Over India) shows many of the same characteristics of bravery and derring-do - the present film only differing in that it wears its old fashioned politics most conspicuously on its sleeve, and sets its adventure amidst the conflicts of an earlier generation, that of 1905 in India. a b Quarterly Indian Army List January 1919, p. 1255. He was of 13th Bengal Native Infantry Regiment, Cadetship applied for 1833/4. Fraser admired the film and More's performance saying "he had a cheery truculence that was much closer to the real Imperial type than the conventional stiff upper lip." He added "The one flaw [of the film] was the title; I remarked to the technical adviser, a senior ex-Indian Army officer, that it seemed odd, having a Hindu prince up yonder, and he replied that he had no idea where the film was meant to be taking place, but wherever it was, it was not the Frontier." [23] Between the wars imperial epics displaying expansive adventure landscapes were produced by the British film industry, including the Korda trilogy of Sanders of the River(1935), The Drum(1938), and The Four Feathers(1939) – the latter two in Technicolor. In the late 1930s Hollywood also made a number of films that celebrated the British empire and bore some resemblance to Westerns, but ceased making such films after the Second World War. While the empire genre in British film continued, there were considerable changes that modernised imperial identity and changed the presentation of imperial heroes and adventure landscapes to bring them into line with the ideal of a Commonwealth of equal nations.

In this story, a Hindu maharajah's state is being overrun by Moslem rebels. Kenneth More as a British captain is charged with getting the small son out of the kingdom and to safety along with the child's nurse, an American played by Lauren Bacall. The long-term plan for control of the district entailed building metalled roads along the lines of communication to a new central base to be established at Razmak. In 1921 work began on the southern road up the Tank Zam from Jandola, under the protection of the Waziristan Force. The following year work on the northern road from the Tochi began at Idak, shielded by the Razmak Force advancing to its objective. The two roads met in 1924, linking North and South Waziristan, and enabling the Indian Army to reorganise both areas as one military district. [27] The Waziristan and Razmak Field Forces then devolved into brigades based permanently at Manzai, Razmak, Gardai, and Bannu. [28] From 1861 the force included a 7th Infantry Regiment, formed from the Hazara Gurkha Battalion, which later that year joined the Gurkha Line as the 5th Gurkha Regiment. Meanwhile, the garrison at Thal, which guarded the Kurram Pass, was soon cut off and besieged by a large Afghan force under the command of General Nadir Khan. The garrison, consisting of four under-strength battalions of Sikhs and Gurkhas and a squadron of cavalry, held out for a week until relieved by a column from Peshawar under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer.
