Description

Don Camillo is constantly at odds with the Communist mayor, Giuseppe Bottazzi, better known as Peppone (meaning, roughly, 'Big Joe') and is also on very close terms with the crucifix in his town church.

Our online collections hold information on over 800,000 film titles – including television programmes, documentaries, newsreels, as well as educational and training films.

It also contains a short biographical piece about the author who seems to have been a very impressive person. And he speaks to his conscience in the form of the crucifix at his parish church, and Jesus dutifully responds with sober judgment at every turn.

To enable this, Giovanni created a third main character, his finest creation and the most surprising. Julien Duvivier is a French director well know by "Sous le ciel de Paris", "Marie-Octobre" and "The Devil and the Ten commandments". But despite their different views these men can count on each other in the fight against social injustice and abuses.

In this later collection, Peppone is the owner of several profitable dealerships, riding the "Boom" years of the 1960s in Italy. In the post-war years (after 1945), Don Camillo Tarocci (his full name, which he rarely uses) is the hotheaded priest of a small town in the Po valley in northern Italy. So in this case you see a very human communist mayor and a skeptical priest, who is still trying to fight communism for the very principle of it, even if there is really no need for it.

Don Camillo and Peppone - Wikipedia

I mention this because one of the reviewers talked about seeing a dubbed version but this was not available on the DVD I watched. Guareschi is quoted as warmly approving of the way that stars Fernandel and Gino Cervi brought to life his two famous protagonists, the battling parish priest and Communist mayor of a small village in post-war Italy. While Peppone makes public speeches about how "the reactionaries" ought to be shot, and Don Camillo preaches fire and brimstone against "godless Communists", they actually grudgingly admire each other. The tensions between the two characters and their respective factions form the basis of the works' satirical plots. Read these stories for a glimpse into an old Italy that still lurks, barely covered, beneath the new Italy.
