Description

The magic in this world was very fascinating. It made me curious to know more and more about it, but at the same time it seemed to be more than what the story required at this point which made it a little bit confusing. Let’s start with what I loved about this book. The world was so rich with lore, and I liked how Baron respected the intelligence of the reader and didn’t oversimply or overexplain things. Chapter 1 immediately hooked me in and the parts with action in were well-paced and suspenseful. The second book takes on a slightly different nature to the first book, in that Hozark is not just tied to the single mission as he was in the first book, and in this book, there is a lot more intrigue. The characters were one dimensional, and attempts at humourous interplay and comic side comments fell flat, or were distinctly high school cafeteria level. Early on I notice there weren't many descriptions of anything. I had a hard time picturing what the ships and people looked like. He probably did this so everyone could makeup their own world. However, he became more descriptive with each book. By the end of the series I still wasn't sure what the ships looked like but I had clearer idea of the people.

A sci-fantasy adventure across space, with magic, starships, sword battles, treachery, deadly beasts, and, of course, a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm. If you like Sci-Fi books and are possibly a little bit of a techy, I guarantee you will enjoy reading this one. It was hard to put down! The author took time to explain what a Ghalian assassin was and described their training program as the entire book revolves around these assassins. A Wampeh Ghalian has one different attribute which is also explained. Thanks to the Editor and BookSirens. I received this book in exchange for an honest review so here we go!

I feel that this could be a five star book if it was better edited. There is too much repetition which becomes boring but it’s saving grace is the excellent world building and the good character depth. I certainly felt empathy for many of the characters such as Happizano Jinnik and Denni. If you love a good story, doesn’t matter the genre, you will like this – and seriously –‘MAGICAL VAMPIRE ASSASSINS!!!’, do I have to say anything else?? Although the topic is death, there is no gore, and the "on screen" violence is action-style, and mostly fair fighting (if fighting a magically enhanced assassin can be called fair). Demelza is another really captivating character, with her ability to keep up with the Masters, but having taken a bit of a different learning path than others. We get to learn more about her in this book. The assassins found a twisted abomination corrupted by Fabius Bile – the Clonefather had formed an alliance with the remaining Brazen Drakes in what came to be known as the War of the Spider . In their combined assault upon the former Chapter Master, two of the Execution Force were killed, with the Eversor Assassin’s self-destructive bio-meltdown finally putting an end to Argento Corian. 3. The Assassination of Urgak ‘the Unstoppable’I didn't know what to expect from this book. The image on the front made me think of the dark elves from R.A. Salvatore's books, while the setting is in space. In short, I went in without preconceptions and enjoyed the book thoroughly.

When the death of a key enemy commander, rogue psyker, or vile demagogue would avert potential disaster for the Imperium, the High Lords of Terra authorise the use of their most deadly weapons: Imperial Assassins. Drawn from several diverse temples and possessed of skills far beyond the capabilities of ordinary humans, the assassins are trained to succeed against even the deadliest of foes. They will complete their mission, no matter the cost. It's a very interesting formula, to match sci-fi and fantasy in a story and even though I feel that there's a lot to evolve, there's also a lot to explore, my rating here represents the potencial for the story to continue and get better because it has that potencial!! However, Moore does an amazing job of conveying the emotional range of his characters, so you really understand what they are feeling, from happy to sad, angry to joyful, you get a good understanding of all of this.

The bullet then continued onwards, striking the explosives and detonating the walker in a catastrophic chain reaction that killed hundreds of surrounding Orks. Speaking of characters, I did like the rest of the cast. Some characters stayed there the entire book and some got introduced halfway, but they never felt too flat and got some cool history themselves (as individual as well as tied to Hozark), which I would love to read about. The main thing that does itch me a bit, are the ‘villains’, since I didn’t get much about them, but then again, it was a short book and it might be for a reason, which I believe it is. The plot is not complex. The story is about a master assassin executing a couple of contracts without really any concern about obstacles and not really being in any danger. The infuriating amount of repetition suggests that this series might have been serialised originally and the constant reminders of…well, everything… might have worked in that context where it was a week or month between chapters. But as an audiobook where you just roll through the chapters it was really irritating.
