The awards were presented at the UK Theatre Awards 2016 ceremony at London's Guildhall in October 2016. I absolutely loved this heartwarming story of a charwoman on an adventure to get herself a Dior dress! I love her trip to Paris and was lucky enough to find a first edition – even if it is a beat-up ex-library copy. What a lovely way to get away from the hubbub and drudgery of every day life, to remind oneself of one's blessings, to take heart in the human spirit, courage and generosity. The way you;ve described Mrs Harris goes to New York as not being able to stand alone now makes sense as to why it;s together.

It's one of those books I like to pick up, flick through and read my favourite bits: the Paris lovers, the damaged Dior dress, and so on. PAUL GALLICO was born in New York City, o Despite the unlikely scenario and the light, romcom-ish story, the writing and the characters deeply resonated with me, made me smile and tear-up several times and filled me with pure joy. Young Henry was being regularly beaten and abused; he appeared increasingly pinched and obviously hungry; his uncomplaining endurance and sweet, unsoured nature under the burden of his sad fate endeared him to the two grandmotherly ladies, and they often mulled over just what could be done.

She lives two doors down from her fellow char and best friend Mrs Butterfield, who always imagines the worst of everything and has no desire to leave the comfort of her small flat and her tea kettle. I know the first book has recently been adapted for cinema in a film featuring Lesley Manville as the eponymous heroine.

Welcome to The Close - a beautiful street of mansions, where gorgeous Stella is the indisputable Queen Bee . The New York story is the same kind of thing, only this time she is invited to go to work for an American couple who employed her in London, and takes the opportunity to smuggle an 8-year-old boy onto the boat so she can track down his GI father. Tried his hand at fiction writing, sold a short story in 1936 - then retired from sports writing to devote himself to fiction writing full-time. I can never have enough of her' Justine Picardie ' It is almost impossible not to succumb to Gallico's spell' Times Literary Supplement Mrs Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich. I'd read Mrs 'arris Goes to Paris last week, and I loved that so much, as soon as I finished it, I began this one. It’s a rare find to come across a book that can move and engage you so completely, and leave an impression that will change the way you look at the world around you. Harris’s efforts to scrimp and save for almost three years and then embark on her trip to Paris, where she meets several interesting characters. One day, Mrs Harris spots a beautiful Christian Dior dress in the wardrobe of one of her clients, and decides that she must have one.

For reasons that include her grim financial prospects and her age, she moves to a widow's boarding house and eventually finds work as a biology teacher. A BOOK CLUB PICK FROM THE QUEEN CONSORT'S READING ROOM***Now a major film, starring Leslie Manville, Isabelle Huppert, Jason Isaacs and Lucas Bravo'Mrs Harris is one of the great creations of fiction - so real that you feel you know her, yet truly magical as well.

The Comfort Food Cafe is perched on a windswept clifftop at what feels like the edge of the world, serving up the most delicious cream teas, beautifully baked breads and carefully crafted cupcakes. I can’t recommend Mrs Harris Goes to Paris and Mrs Harris Goes to New York enough; they are not to be missed!
