Robert Crais is a legend who deserves his place alongside Chandler, Hammett & Himes as a true master of the crime and mystery genre' STEVE CAVANAGH The Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novels are among the very finest series in existence. I love these books. You will too' STEVE CAVANAGH Racing The Light is another grand slam for the master storyteller Robert Crais. If there’s a better dynamic duo than Elvis Cole and Joe Pike in all of crime fiction, I’m not aware of it.” Cole discovers Skylar is trying to make it as an artist. Her work is being shown at a local gallery but until her career takes off she hasn’t left her former life behind yet. Skylar doesn’t just make film’s, she’s an escort. Maybe she witnessed something, got too close to the wrong people. Cole starts poking around, he’s not the only one trying to find Josh. When a car tries to mow him down he turns to his partner Joe Pike for help. Joe Pike plays only a small walk-on part in this one and i for one missed his presence very much. I am wondering if this series has now run its natural course and whether Robert Crais is now slightly struggling to find a fresh storyline.

Racing the Light (Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, book 19) by Robert Racing the Light (Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, book 19) by Robert

There is loads of the wry humour we have come to love Elvis for, and it's always fun to have Joe Pike and Jon Stone involved in the investigations. The race starts at the bottom of the slipway on Coastguards Beach, and finishes with a mighty uphill climb to the SchoolhouseDevon restaurant, high above the water. A couple of weeks later Adele Schumacher and her minders waltz into Cole’s office. Her boy Josh is missing and the police don’t care. Of course, she wants him found. She throws a wedge of cash on the desk. She doesn’t believe in banks, telephones or digital trails. All round this is starting to sound like a very weird family because Adele’s theory is that the US government is behind Josh’s disappearance and the answers are to be found in the Nevada Desert. Area 51, to be exact. The Cole / Pike novels are in the tradition of the pulp detective fiction genre, sometimes known as hardboiled detective fiction. If you like Raymond Chandler and Robert B Parker, you will likely love these. Reading a new Robert Crais book is a treat to me. He's a talented story teller who builds a world you want to inhabit for a while, filled with sympathetic characters and a solid storyline. His resume speaks for itself. The man can write. I'm not sure what the point of writing this little review is as it will be buried under thousands of others, but here goes. It’s the original RACE THE LIGHT CLASSIC – 8.5 miles of shadowy estuarine trails, meandering through the privately owned Flete Estate. There’s a lot going on in Racing the Light—romance, corruption, high-speed action, cutting-edge spyware—but Mr. Crais keeps it all in fine balance.”

A whirlwind of action, fisticuffs, and stray bullets, along with Crais’ usual dose of heart and humor, make for a riveting and satisfying read.” Robert Crais is a legend who deserves his place alongside Chandler, Hammett & Himes as a true master of the crime and mystery genre' STEVE CAVANAGH Tough, funny and hugely entertaining – superbly crafted crime fiction in the best traditions of the PI novel. It’s easy to see why Robert Crais has won many major prizes for his writing, he’s spot on here. With the return of Lucy and Ben, I get the feeling the author is starting to tie up loose ends in preparation for a final book. Crais’ affection for his characters, masterful pacing, and dry wit make this one of his better efforts…[Crais]keeps the traditional detective novel alive and well.”Robert Crais is a legend who deserveshis place alongside Chandler, Hammett & Himes as a true master of the crime and mystery genre' STEVE CAVANAGH Crais hits the ground running with Racing the Light, employing all his trademark touches: an engrossing plot-heavy story accented with Elvis’ wry humor, solid action, characters whom readers have come to love and a high entertainment level.” Written with the heart, humour, and relentless suspense for which Crais is famous, Racing the Light delivers Elvis Cole’s most dangerous case yet.

Racing the Light | Book by Robert Crais | Official Publisher

Cole and Pike have become firm favourites with lovers of American PI fiction and Racing the Light is their 19th outing. Cole is the first port of call for clients, a slightly whimsical character but anyone underestimating his smarts will do so at their peril. Pike is the hard in hardboiled – if you need a wingman, he’s your go-to guy. This time an oddball missing persons case turns out to be a lot more complicated than it first appears. For a different take on California there’s always Michael Connelly’s The Dark Hours or a slightly darker vision of LA in A Man Named Doll by Jonathan Ames. The start time for the race is 1:50pm (subject to change of 15-20 minutes depending on weather and tidal conditions on Raceday). There’s a double crossing of the River Erme estuary so it’s a race against the light.. and the tide. So wet feet from the off!
