Description

Martha’s maps will take you on an enchanting journey through her world, starting from outer space and zooming in, map by map, to our planet, Martha’s neighbourhood, and beyond, to her dreams of a future where ANYTHING is possible. The map element is great for teaching children a sense of scale but even more brilliant is how the map theme is tied in with Martha’s dreams for her future. No matter how small Martha may be and no matter how little room she takes up in the universe or Earth or city, she has the potential to go to big places and to achieve very big things! Development Matters (2021) Communication and Language Encourage children to talk about a problem together and come up with ideas for how to solve it. Give children problem-solving words and phrases, such as ‘so that’, ‘because’, ‘I think it’s…’, ‘you could…’, ‘it might be…’. EYFS (DfE, 2021) Understanding the World involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community. The frequency and range of children’s personal experiences increases their knowledge and sense of the world around them. Watch this short film of families talking about their experiences of being homeless in the USA: https://bit.ly/3nTEIqt. Pause to discuss what the children say and how it makes them feel.

Development Matters (2021) Expressive Arts and Design: Provide opportunities to work together to develop and realise creative ideas.UK residents only. Entry closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 28th August 2022. Terms and Conditions apply (PDF). All in all, I am so happy I got the chance to read this book and add it to my collection! I would recommend this to all~

Share A Place to Stay: A Shelter Storyby Erin Gunti and Esteli Meza, which shows a women’s shelter through the eyes of a young girl. It includes reasons why people become homeless. None of the main characters are white and Martha's friends and neighbours are of a variety of different ethnicities while people in wheelchairs are represented too. Introduce terminology – ‘city’, ‘town’, ‘village’, ‘community’, ‘urban’, ‘rural’. Discuss what they mean and what experience children have of these places. Finally I had the chance to read this one! I had my eyes on it for a while, then one of my libraries got in their collection… but apparently it went missing as it is still not on any shelves, and then I just decided to get it in English. XDThis series explores meaningful and practical ways to introduce young children to UNESCO’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). See also ‘All about…Early Childhood Education for Sustainability’ by Dr Diane Boyd, www.nurseryworld.co.uk Explore local parks and gardens so you know what facilities are available. Perhaps make links with community gardeners. Development Matters (2021) Understanding the World: Draw children’s attention to the immediate environment, introducing and modelling new vocabulary where appropriate. Leigh is an award-winning animator and worked as art director on the BAFTA-award winning animated series, Charlie and Lola.

Revisit SDG 1 and research homes around the world. Introduce the word ‘slum’, share images and discuss how it would feel to live there. She is also an award-winning children’s book author and illustrator, who is absolutely passionate about writing, making things up and daydreaming. Among her many brilliant picture books is Don’t Dip Your Chips in Your Drink, Kate, written by Caryl Hart, which won Highly Commended in the 2010 Sheffield Children’s Book Award, Picture Book Category. Development Matters (2021) Understanding the World Share non-fiction texts that offer an insight into contrasting environments. Een ideaal boek dat past bij onderbouwthema's als huizen, wonen, ruimte en ook zeker rekenonderdelen bevat.
