So,” Wayne said softly, dangling below, keeping pace with her instead of going on ahead, “wanna hear my list of ways how women break the laws of physics?” With all due respect, Lord Ladrian,” Melstrom said. “You are a new parent, and obviously don’t understand how to raise a child. You don’t give in to their demands; you hold firm, knowing that your decisions are best for them. They will eventually see reason. As a father is to a son, Elendel is to the Outer Cities.” Lyndsey Luther and Ross Newberry of Tor.com wrote a review as in-character as Wax and Wayne. They called the story a "romp-roarin’, steel-pushin’, emotion-wrenchin’ rail-car ride full a’ surprises, laughs and tears" and said that "Sanderson bloke’s right good at spinnin’ a tale." They also praised the character growth and connections to other series. [10]

Jak was a better shot,” she whispered. “When Gud the Killer sighted on him, Jak shot him first—clean across the river.” More outrage. Wax weathered it as the governor consulted with his vice governor. She was a smart one. Anything Varlance accomplished that didn’t involve cutting a ribbon or kissing a baby was probably her doing. We will,” the governor interrupted, “require Melstrom, Hasting, and Erikell to sit out the vote. Assuring that the vote is not corrupted.”The second problem was far closer to home. It was the parts of the Basin that were outside the capital, the people in what were collectively known as the Outer Cities. For years, maybe decades, tensions had been building between the city of Elendel and everyone else. Little Maxillium stepped up beside his mother, looking very serious as he scanned his own list of scribbles. At five years old he knew his letters, but preferred to make up his own.

I think MeLaan is going to break up with me,” Wayne said softly. “That’s why maybe I’ve been uncharacteristically downbeat in my general disposition as of late.” Ross: I still love Steris, and the way she continues to epitomize Brandon’s excellent habit of showing the ways that neurodiverse characters often exceed the abilities of their more “normal” peers in ways that either advance the story or literally save the day. I have a ton of neurodiverse friends who identify with one or more of these characters, and the associations have almost universally been positive and helpful. Wrong Context Magic: The Scadrians get their first exposure to forgery, AonDor, and the aetherbound, invested arts that originate in other worlds. Moonlight makes clear that they're not magic, they just work in different ways than allomancy and feruchemy. In the aftermath, Kelsier and Harmony debate about whether Harmony should introduce technology to the people or not, and Wax lives happily with Steris and his children. The city honors Wayne by putting up a statue of him. Most of the hands on the Senate floor went up. For a simple vote like this, a more straw poll method would do—unless the vote turned out to be very close. It wasn’t.

Lyn: Watching Steris evolve and realize her own self-worth was pretty amazing over the course of the series, too. So what did Jak do?” Wayne asked. “Did he sneak up? Not very lawman-like to sneak. I don’t think they do that. I’ll bet he didn’t sneak.”

Marasi has many theories on criminal behavior and justice that she talks about with Wax throughout her time with him. Until the next day, when there was another collapse at the mine. That night, his ma didn’t come home. As Wax stepped into the vast chamber—which buzzed with activity as senators returned from the short recess—he didn’t go to his seat. Over the last few days, senators had debated the current bill, and his was the last speech in line. He had secured this spot with many promises and much trading, as he hoped it would give his arguments the advantage, give him the best chance to avert a terrible decision.

Wax's sister Telsin, the leader of the Set, a terrorist group working for Trell (actually a Shard of Adonalsium called Autonomy), plots to smuggle a magical equivalent of an atomic bomb into Elendel. Marasi goes on a mission with a mysterious group known as the Ghostbloods, led by Kelsier, to stop Autonomy's forces from invading the world. Meanwhile, Wax and Wayne go to confront Telsin at the Set's base, killing several Set members, but discover that the bomb is not there, and instead is on a ship headed for the city. Marasi stops enemies in time and disables their portal, preventing the invasion, while Wax reaches the boat with Wayne. The duo discover that the bomb can be defused, but the defuser will die in the process. Wayne sacrifices himself to both defuse the bomb and save Wax. Telsin's overloaded body dies upon Autonomy removing her influence. After Wax discovers a new type of explosive that can unleash unprecedented destruction and realizes that the Set must already have it, an immortal kandra serving Scadrial's god, Harmony, reveals that Bilming has fallen under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set. And Trell isn't the only factor at play from the larger Cosmere - Marasi is recruited by offworlders with strange abilities who claim their goal is to protect Scadrial...at any cost.

Lyn: We’ll get into specifics on our critiques down below, but for now I’ll just say I agree. Overall I’d say that this book—and the series as a whole—is well worth reading, for sure. It’s a great jaunt through a fun and engaging world, and I love what Sanderson is doing with the magic system and how we’re watching it evolve along with technology. I also liked the atomic weaponry parallels, and the way the book shows us the very real fear that inspires. From a purely technical standpoint, The Lost Metal is exactly what you’d expect from Sanderson, if you like his other works. Strong characters and a great plot with an engaging and explosive finale. Fun dialogue with a distinctive voice. Fascinating worldbuilding and magic-system work that displays the amount of thought that went into both. Prose that is clear and engaging without straying into the overly poetic. He flipped the medallion and then Pushed it higher, all the way up toward the ceiling high above. It came streaking down again, glimmering in the light. As he snatched it, he glanced at Admiral Jonnes, current ambassador from the Malwish nation. She sat in a special place on the Senate floor, where visiting mayors from Outer Cities were given seats. None had come to this proceeding. A visible sign of their anger. Ross: I expected to get Kelsier stuff, and more insight into the Ghostbloods. I was not expecting Shai, and definitely wasn’t expecting aethers to make their first canonical on-screen appearance. I know Brandon’s initial idea for the interconnectedness of the Cosmere was that every story would stand on its own, and that worldhoppers and such would only exist as Easter eggs, and I also know that position has evolved over time, but wow. I was certainly expecting a Kelsier sighting, but I didn’t go into this expecting for the secret organization to be composed of main characters of books from other Cosmere planets and people wielding magic tech from other unpublished works.
