Throughout this series I have learnt lots of things about how people lived at this time and the different challenges that they face.

SKIN TAKER - National Geographic Kids SKIN TAKER - National Geographic Kids

Once Janice is healed and human again, the Skin-Taker explains that it would be a shame if such fine skin were transformed into the ugly, rotting flesh of an Abyssal Thing, and that he saved her so that he could get her skin later. I read the book in early December last year, during a particularly cold week and this only added to the feel of the book for me, as the cold seeps in and all hope seems to fade. I then travelled by Hurtigruten down the coast of Norway to Bergen (little knowing that within weeks this would be impossible, thanks to the coronavirus). Like the previous books in the series, Skin Taker takes place in northern Scandinavia, so the wildlife is appropriate to the region – as are the seasonal changes in the hours of daylight. Just the characters' general outlook towards the forest and their attitude of not taking more than they need, is a fantastic thought-point for children that is not presented in a preachy way at all, but in a completely natural way to the story. The emotional dilemmas and relationships have resonance; the detail and atmosphere of the natural world are truly tangible, and what an exhilarating immersion in the wild this offers adventure-seeking readers. Wolf is always a delight, and Dark finally got some further characterisation that I felt he lacked in Viper’s Daughter. That’s after the Ice Age, but before farming spread to Scandinavia – when the land was one vast Forest. This book pulled me in immediately, Michelle Paver still conjures up all of the atmosphere of the original books and expands the stories of her beloved characters, while still isn’t afraid to impact them and their world massively.

In " Percy Plays Piano", Horace and the Rubber Fishes are attempting to steal from another pirate ship. Even though Mike killed Eddie when they were kids to protect the town from him, Eddie's spirit remains. The book is extremely easy to get into and is incredibly enjoyable from the very first page, it has a very dramatic start and really makes you want to read on to the rest of the book. Concerning non-literary influences, I’d have to name my parents, who ensured that I grew up surrounded by books (despite not having much money at the time), and who always encouraged me to follow my interests and take risks, while somehow managing to instill a bit of commonsense about how far to go! Ongoing nightmares, being treated as crazy and the endless struggle to repair her relationship with her older sister, Melrose.

And enemies that Torak may have thought he would never have to face again may be closer than he bargains for. First we got 3 of the 4 stones to create the arrows to save the First Tree, but then it takes forever for the last one. Guhcin regrets that Jaxsik's act of retribution allowed for this tragedy to unfold, but he believes they might avoid repeating it by learning tolerance from the Bright-Throats. The main change came between the sixth book, GHOST HUNTER, and last year’s VIPER’S DAUGHTER, because the story in VIPER begins when Torak and Renn are seventeen summers old, and have been living with each other (and the wolves) for two summers.

So that’s quite a big change, and one I had to handle sensitively, giving older readers hints about how Torak and Renn are getting on as a mated pair, without grossing out ten-year-old readers who don’t want anything too romantic. When asked by Janice why he does, he responds with the page quote, notably staring directly at the viewers as he says it. Atmospheric, exhilarating and a complete page turner, Skin Taker is Michelle Paver at her very best. Yes, they're worldwide bestsellers, but in my opinion, they do not get the recognition they deserve! Firstly, I wondered how life had been for you during the pandemic – how do you feel your writing and creativity has been affected?
