There is an elegant and natural flow to Stand By Me, which is stunning because there is so much about it that feels episodic as you reflect on the seemingly endless list of iconic moments – from the hair-raising run on the trestle, to the showdown with the ball-chomping Chopper, to Gordie’s heartbreaking openness about his relationship with his father. The movie only has an 89 minute run time, but it is so immersive and deeply felt that by the end you feel as though you’ve spent a whole two days with the characters, and it’s an experience you want to have over and over again. Ace Merrill and Vern Tessio later appear in "Nona" a short story from the collection Skeleton Crew. Maxtone-Graham, Ian (December 9, 2001). "The Blunder Years". Simpsons Archive. One of the most bizarre features of this novella was that it contains two short stories written by an older version of the protagonist and both were fairly unpleasant and seemingly unnecessary. The first is one part erotica, one part family drama. This one at least seemed to mirror some of the lives of the boys so I could kind of understand its inclusion, but the erotica part of it was still pretty unpleasant. The second one is about a pie eating contest that devolves into literally everyone throwing up. It was unpleasant to read and was seemingly irrelevant to the overall plot, it kind of felt like a riff on Carrie. Jonathan Bernstein states the pop culture discussions between characters in films by Quentin Tarantino originate in the similar semi-serious banter between the boys of Stand by Me. [59] Although popularly known as “The King of Horror,” King’s work also draws from science fiction, fantasy, and crime fiction. His novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, originally published in his short fiction collection Different Seasons (1982), tells of a prisoner at the Shawshank Penitentiary who becomes involved in a money-laundering scheme concocted by one of the guards. His eight-book fantasy series, The Dark Tower (1982–2012), is a mash-up of Tolkienesque fantasy and spaghetti westerns. King has also collaborated with his sons on various works. His elder son, Joe, has become a celebrated writer of speculative fiction in his own right under the pen name Joe Hill. They collaborated on two novellas, Throttle (2009) and In the Tall Grass (2012). King and Owen co-wrote Sleeping Beauties in 1997. In addition to his fiction, King is also celebrated for his advice on the craft of writing. In his 2000 book On Writing, he urges aspiring writers to prioritize making time to read and write—at least four to six hours a day. He believes strongly that authorial talent does not supersede practice and drive. It's Stephen King so know its gonna be a darker read but despite that morbid premise The Body is a story of friendships. The boys are around 12 years old and they've been inseparable for years but they can feel themselves growing apart. High School tends to do that. When I was a kid I hung out with about 6 girls and we just knew we would be friends forever but by sophomore year I was only still friends with 3 and as an adult I'm only friends with 1. But this story was even more than just capturing the essence of nostalgia. It was wholly morbid at times and an intricate exploration into one’s own inner monsters and mortality itself. I really loved the adventure aspect and the friendships. The leech scene will always be unforgettable! I even managed to catch an Easter egg! There is a little boy wearing a yellow plastic raincoat stepping in puddles mentioned. Sounds like a reference to “It” to me! I love when movies and books drop Easter eggs. It’s so much fun finding them!

Stephen King Quotes

In the end, through The Body King deconstructs what life in a small community can really mean. He does away the mythical community of perfect neighbors, where schoolteachers are moral compasses, parents excel in their roles and children are free to experience happy childhoods. He ends The Body by exposing an authentic depiction of what life can be like in small communities. A place where parents can be indifferent and abusive, where teachers can be corrupt, neighbors can be hypocritical and where children can die. But it also a place where friends can bloom and where the bonds created in childhood can become stronger. Vern overhears his big brother, Billy, talking with his friend, Charlie, about finding the body. Billy does not want to inform police because it could draw attention to a car theft he and Charlie committed. When Vern tells his friends about the body, the four boys—hoping to become local heroes—decide to look for it. After Chris steals his father's pistol, he and Gordie run into local hoodlums "Ace" Merrill and Chris's older brother, "Eyeball". Ace threatens Chris with a lit cigarette and steals Gordie's Yankees cap, which was a gift from Denny.

The Body is definitely more Coming-of-Age than Horror, and the adventure these four boys take on along with their individual family circumstances, blend together into a worthy read/listen. It solidifies the truth about the friendships of our childhood being the one's we remember the most fondly. King takes this story full-circle for the reader, which is quite unusual for a novella. The audiobook is a great listen with narrator, Frank Muller's voicing of the young characters and as the 'later in life' Gordie. It” terrified me so bad as a child that I still can’t pass by a sewer drain without being reminded of it. 😂 🤡 But mostly this is a story about friendships, and how they won’t last forever. At least most of them don’t. And maybe that’s for the better. Because you have to become your own person. You have to change and grow and experience new things and meet new people. You have to live your life. A Constable Bannerman is mentioned in the story. It does not appear that the constable is same Sheriff George Bannerman who appears in Cujo and The Dead Zone.

The narration then goes into fast-forward. It describes the next year or so briefly, stating that Teddy and Vern drift off, befriending some younger boys whom they can lord over in the treehouse. In high school, just as Chris predicted, Gordie begins taking college-preparation courses. Unexpectedly, so does Chris. In spite of abuse from his father, taunts from his classmates and distrust from teachers and school counselors, he manages to be successful with help from Gordie. Waxman, Olivia (August 8, 2016). It was Teddy who first noticed that the shade of the ash tree was getting longer and asked me what time it was. I looked at my watch and was surprised to see it was quarter after two.

Thoughts: By far and away my biggest issue with this novella was that I didn't care for the characters. Part of this is that the novella feels a lot like a precursor to IT, and Gordon in particular feels like he's just a slight variation of Big Bill. I did feel pity for Chris and Teddy, though I couldn't tell you a single thing about Vern. The fact that it seemed so much like IT also effected my enjoyment of it, there were a lot of similarities here. Rob Reiner found four young boys who were the characters we played. I was awkward and nerdy and shy and uncomfortable in my skin and sensitive, and River was cool and smart and passionate and even at that age kind of like a father figure to some of us, Jerry was one of the funniest people I had ever seen in my life, either before or since, and Corey was unbelievably angry and in an incredible amount of pain and had a terrible relationship with his parents. [19] The end product is quite possibly the best coming-of-age story ever written. This is what the saying “boys will be boys” is about. It’s about going on an adventure, and saying swear words when out of your parents’ earshot, and trying a cigarette just so you can say you did, and standing up to bullies, and most of all it’s about friendship. Because really? Adapted into the 1986 classic film Stand By Me, The Body is an iconic exploration of friendship, loneliness and adventure, an unforgettable coming-of-age story by master chronicler of small-town adolescence and universal experience, Stephen King. A number of key moments from “The Body” were directly inspired by events in King’s own life. When he was in seventh grade, for example, there was a controversy about stolen milk money – though unlike the character Chris Chambers, the young writer was viewed as above suspicion because of his good reputation. Likewise, the trestle run is akin to a rite of passage that he faced when he was in college, and the author had his own terrifying episode involving a pond full of leeches.Attanasio, Paul (August 22, 1986). "Movies: 'Stand by Me' ". The Washington Post. Archived from the original on May 19, 2017 . Retrieved April 24, 2017. Over the course of the narrative, the adult Gordie recalls his first published story, Stud City, about the life of a simple man named Edward "Chico" May whose older brother also died. He has a girlfriend, Jane, who he does not have particularly strong feelings for. Chico knows that his stepmother Virginia slept with his brother before he died, but he hesitates to tell his father about it. One day, Chico has a fight with his father over Virginia and leaves the house.
