romcom’s aren’t typically faves of mine as i prefer emo romances, but this book had me laughing and smiling and vibing. Christina Lauren can do no wrong tbh 👏🏼 it felt like their tried and true, fun love stories. I blink up across the table at my best friend, Jess, and realize I’ve been essentially hypnotizing myself by stirring the olive in my martini around and around and around. The Premise! A successful romance writer is casted as the lead in a reality dating TV show and falls for the show’s producer. What could be better?!! In summation, the chemistry between Fizzy and Connor is nothing short of perfection. I can genuinely attest that my adoration for this book eclipses even that of Love Equation.

Don’t get me wrong, both Fizzy and Connor are not perfect (but yes they are), they have flaws (no, shhh, these babies are flawless) and they make mistakes but that’s okay because they learn from them. There is a bit of drama added because, well, Fizzy is literally the star of Connor’s reality show and supposed to find her true love within the show, not behind the cameras. We also explore ridiculous and antiquated stereotypes about the romance genre and I loved seeing Fizzy and later on Connor calling people out for not seeing how breathtaking romance fiction can be. We also have an incredible cast of secondary characters, for example Connor’s daughter and his ex-wife, not to mention Fizzy’s best friend Jess (who you’ll be familar with if you’ve read The Soulmate Equation). There’s also tons of personal growth and learning from the things you have done in the past and there’s a strong focus on what it means to love and to be in love, especially when you think you’ll never really get it. Watching Fizzy relearn what it means to love and falling in love for the first time after having written about it for ages and then see Connor struggling to pursue Fizzy’s happily-ever-after even if he isn’t a part of that equation was nothing short of riveting. I couldn’t put this story down even if I wanted to because these characters just wouldn’t let go of me. Taking a deep, steadying breath, I— Shit. I really, really like the smell of his Ice Zone Sports Hero Silver Blade deodorant. With a smile, I say, “I’m glad you took a break from flirting with my dad to study your show’s demographic.” I didn’t sleep with any of them,” I blurt. “I haven’t slept with anyone in a year.” I did the math a couple of days ago. It feels weird to say it out loud.Another winning romance from Lauren, full of big laughs, a few tears, and some seriously steamy scenes. Connor was a different character in that his personality slowly came to light the deeper you get into the story. He wasn’t easy to flush out at first but it worked because what finally did emerge was this hero that surpasses any stereotypical romance hero. She takes a second to absorb this. The phrase even writing a single sentence hangs between us. “I knew you’d been in a slump,” she says, “but I don’t think I realized how bad it was.” Fizzy’s biggest demand when signing on to the dating show was casting the contestants by romance archetypes. Discuss your opinions of this stipulation. If you had to do the same, what archetypes would you ask for? Some of the most impactful relationships in the story are between Connor, his ex-wife, and his daughter. Discuss how their nontraditional family structure and dynamic may have affected Connor’s story line.

First and foremost, we got a really wonderful heroine in romance author Felicity “Fizzy” Chen. Intelligent, loyal, bold, and hilarious AF, Fizzy is the stuff female MCs should all be made of—i.e., relatable, down-to-earth women, who you can laugh and cry with, and want nothing more than to be besties with IRL. Much like the multitude of readers who devoured the captivating Soulmate Equation crafted by this dynamic duo, I found myself thrusting my fist in exhilaration and exclaiming, "Let Fizzy bask in her own story!" This vivacious, intelligent, audacious, and vibrant woman holds the remarkable ability to command a scene and assume the perfect supporting role, rightfully earning her pursuit of a Happily Ever After.I don't watch Bachelor/Bachelorette type shows, so I can't say for certain, but it seems like it was realistically written on what goes down on one. Sparks fly when a romance writer and a documentary filmmaker join forces to craft the ultimate Hollywood love story—but only if they can keep the chemistry between them from taking the whole thing off script—from the “divine” (Jodi Picoult) New York Times bestselling authors of The Soulmate Equation and The Unhoneymooners . I really liked both Fizzy and Connor as characters and as a couple. There was wonderful banter and connection between them. Like I said I don't normally read this kind of book but they were hot AF. I don't watch reality shows like The Real Housewives or The Bachelor and the fact that I liked this book even though there is a Bachelor-like show as the main plot says a lot about how well done this book is. My stomach tilts. “Whew, that’s . . .” I’m about to say that’s terrifying, because just the idea of bringing multiple men over to my mother’s house for her to inspect makes me want to roll into traffic. But for the first time since we started talking about this, there’s a light in Connor’s eyes that looks genuine, and if hanging with Papa Chen did that for him, who am I to pour water on the fire? “That’s a great idea,” I say with a limp smile.

I have to say I was a little worried that Christina and Lauren were writing a British character because I’ve just read one where the H was a Brit but some of his vocabulary missed the mark and it spoiled the book for me. Connor is not only British but he’s Northern like me. I have to say, it was remarkably well done. Big thumbs up from me at whoever did the beta read. It’s not like you’ve wanted to be in one,” she reminds me. “I don’t know who Felicity Chen is if she’s not treating dating like it’s an extreme sport.” Now, I should say that I am NOT a fan of reality TV. In fact, I avoid it like the plague, but a reality TV show starring a romance author with men representing different romance book hero types is something I could definitely get behind and watch. The grand gesture! It was perfect and while it easy to predict how the story would play out, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment whatsoever. When I first received the invitation to speak at this ceremony, River immediately slapped a twenty-dollar bill down onto the table between us and declared, “This is going to go completely sideways, Fizzy. Convince me otherwise.” Fizzy and Connor spark immediate chemistry, finding something special in each other. The problem is Connor should be helping Fizzy find her soulmate and any relationship between them is strictly— and legally—forbidden. As tension and chemistry reaches a fever pitch, the show, their careers, and their futures, hang precariously in the balance.

Fizzy claimed that a deal breaker in her past relationship with one of the heroes, Evan, was a horrible tattoo. Would this be a deal breaker for you? Discuss what other nonstarters you may have seen both in the story and in real life. I stare flatly at her. She and her husband, the aforementioned River Peña, seem to be connected constantly by a vibrating, sexy laser beam. The answer here is very obvious. “Sex on every flat surface of the hotel room.” It’s incredible that Christina and Lauren have written thirty books together and somehow they still manage to surprise me with every single one of them. These ladies don’t get older, they just get better and I can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next.
