How Mountbatten have been appointed, the British Politics, all these kind of inside information about the crown made it easier to understand their mentality and the things that they were going through during the Independence. The only Indian people worth praising are the corrupt Maharajas, who were put into place, forthe most part, by the Raj. The riot that followed, how Lord Mountbatten helped at the time of crises on the insistence of Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhai Patel even after giving Independence to India and Pakistan was something I only have heard from word of mouth.

They were part of a campaign of psychological warfare being conducted by the Moslem League to create panic among Sikhs and Hindus. Yet, for all that, for all her ills, their India was also one of the supreme and enduring symbols protruding above the cultural horizons of mankind. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them. Even after 60 odd years, the recollection of some of the events is truly sickening, even to those of my generation who have never experienced the anguish the men and women at that time suffered. The authors paint the aristocratic, pompous, arrogant fat man in a light that far exceeds any propaganda papers.

There would have been no problem had we been dealing solely with the Congress Party of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. The author however, succeeds because of the little incidents he manages to present in an engaging way.Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge. No one listened to his warnings; Jinnah turned a deaf ear, Nehru-Patel duo were eager to see British go and rule an independent country; but all of them were in for a rude shock when rioting and killing on a large scale ensued as soon as Partition and independence were formally announced. My mind overflows with plethora of plot ideas and I pen them down to keep track of my thought process.

It was all new to me, it was fascinating, fun and relevant - after all at that time Indira Ghandi was prime minister of India (she had no connection with Ghandi but was the daughter of Nehru - I wonder is that all meaningless to anyone reading this, it is amazing as you get older how so many events and people that seemed important have dwindled into obscurity) the world created by the events of 1947 was still very much with us.

Although most may know that the partition caused obscene and bloody massacres between Hindus, Moslems and Sikhs, the ferocity is beyond imagination. One the one hand, it will give the reader a profound sense of the tragedy of Indian partition upon independence in 1947. This book comes off as portraying the functioning and benevolent British Raj that sadly and unfortunately had to go due to extenuating circumstances. If I wanted a history lesson as tainted by colonial lenses I would have probably read any number of history books written during the Raj.
