She later gave one notebook to Jeremy Sandford, the playwright, because he had written a piece about Kilvert for the radio which she liked. FK seems to be a fascinating person, one that you would like to meet until you realise that he died 139 years ago.

A country clergyman born in 1840, Kilvert spent much of his time visiting parishioners, walking the lanes and fields of Herefordshire and writing in his diary. and later a one-volume selection Kilvert's Diary, 1870–1879 (Jonathan Cape, 1944—corrected in 1960, and with an abridged and illustrated version for children published as Ardizzone's Kilvert in 1976).This new edition of William Plomer’s original selection contains new archival material as well as a fascinating introduction illuminating Kilvert’s world and the history of the diaries. Kilvert has touched and delighted and (mildly shocked) readers of his diaries ever since they were first published.

The Cornish Holiday was also published in 1989, edited by Richard Maber and Angela Tregoning and published by Alison Hodge. The thing I enjoyed most about this though was its history from someone who was actually alive at the time. The series is/was a set of beautifully filmed short episodes, reflecting Kilvert's often brief diary entries. The bearers, blinded by the sweeping pall, could not see where they were going and nearly missed the Cloister arch, but at length we got safe into the narrow dark passage and into the Cloisters.

I liked the older people's stories of the olden days -- it's not just the Victorian's present that's different to ours, it's the past that they're most familiar with.

At last by a wild effort and tremendous heave the ponderous coffin was borne up the steps and through the door into the Cathedral where the choristers, quite unconscious of the scene and the fearful struggle going on behind, were singing up the nave like a company of angels. The Diary, which paints a unique picture of country life in mid-Victorian times, has come to be recognised as a minor classic; its author has been compared to Dorothy Wordsworth, whom he admired, and even Pepys. One of the bearers on the right side was very short, so short that he could not properly support the coffin level. That is the inescapable fact that comes to mind as you read the diaries of a man who died over a 130 years ago. Kilvet's diary paints an excellent picture of Victorian country life; as a clergyman, he interacted with pretty much all classes, and he was sympathetic to the problems of the poor (which is not exactly a given with the Church of England in the 19th Century).
