Description
Another peculiar tradition involving children is La Danza de los Viejitos (the Dance of the Old Men) where boys and young men dressed like grandfathers crouch and jump in an energetic dance. [43] That is why discovering tequila during the Day of the Dead festivities encourages marveling at its flavor and connection with the celebration. It is to realize that tequila is not an iconic drink but a true cultural treasure. Through it, one can understand the importance of honoring departed loved ones and how Mexican culture embraces death as part of life. The Day of the Dead and tequila are inseparable. Oaxaca has mainly gained popularity as the destination for the dead as it is close to Mitla, the underworld city of the Zapotec culture. It is believed that here is where the energy is felt strongest. The spirited celebrations are always accompanied by a liquid libation: mezcal, often considered a magical or perhaps even medicinal drink. In Oaxaca they say, “ Para todo mal, mezcal, para todo bien, también” (mezcal for bad and mezcal for good, too.) “Mezcal in Oaxaca is the drink we all have in common to pay homage to the deceased,” says Xaime Niembro, director of Gracias a Dios Mezcal. “And above all, is the drink that the living and dead like. In these kinds of events or celebrations, it’s when we realize that mezcal is there in the good and bad times.” Agave Distillations
Locals of Jalisco celebrate the Patronal Festival on August 6, and it continues to be a regional fair for another two weeks. Moreover, there are also pilgrimages from different places that travel to Jalisco to visit during the festivities. #17: Coronation of the Virgin of Zapopan (January) In these ceremonies, people build altars in their homes with ofrendas, offerings to their loved ones’ souls. Candles light photos of the deceased and items left behind. Families read letters and poems and tell anecdotes and jokes about the dead. Offerings of tamales, chiles, water, tequila and pan de muerto, a specific bread for the occasion, are lined up by bright orange or yellow cempasúchil flowers, marigolds, whose strong scent helps guide the souls home.
Sauza was present at the Day of the Dead.
There are also different performances by renowned artists, horse races, serenades, and bullfights that locals look forward to. #26: Lagos de Moreno Founding Anniversary (March) Give (good) tequila a chance. Expect Mezcal to challenge you. Both are much better than I thought. I want to try more… I forgot to mention wine Locals and tourists come to watch the Passion of Christ without worry, as it is described both in English and Spanish language. 🥳 Tequila festivals in Jalisco Mexico #14: Santa Cruz Day (May) The International Book Fair in Guadalajara, also known as FIL, was first celebrated in 1987. This is a first for me. The cactus reminds me of snap peas– basically a cheesy salad with the odd spicy chili. Pretty damn good. Slightly chewy, the cactus contrasts with the lettuce’s crunch. Some vinegar adds a sharpness but is not too much. Tuff salad. Mole Coloradito MixtoWise, Danno. "Port Isabel's Day of the Dead Celebration". Texas Travel. About.com.
