The characterisation was brilliant, the characters felt so real that I didn't really want the book to end! Ellie finds expressing her true emotions very hard, but by using music she can express her feelings more openly.

Now Mrs Aachara’s leading the class and it seems she’s spotted something in Ellie’s ‘performance’ that even she doesn’t know is present. Aber dann verliebt sie sich unverhofft in ihren neuen Mitschüler Ash, der allerdings schon mit ihrer besten Freundin zusammen zu sein scheint. This is a long book, which is the only reason I rated it down a little - the story did start to drag in a couple of places. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors.

This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). The music references totally did it for me and my music geek heart, and the main romance lowkey gave me butterflies because it was adorable and built on connecting through songs and it just made me happy. Love the characters dynamic although mostly were freaking overly dramatic and Ellie did frustrate me somehow when she goes judging her opinion and not trusting her friends when they said she was good (don't go being too toxic to yourself, kiddo). Miscommunication is one of my least favourite tropes in books but I think it fits well within the genre and this book, in particular.

I connected with Ellie is so many ways; from not wholly belonging to the Brown crowd, nor the White crowd to living life with a soundtrack in my head (albeit Ellie would argue her taste in music is much better, I'd have to argue that indeed it is not). It’s why so few people, other than Jess, know about her playlists, her humour, her creativity, and then the backing singers she imagines in so many different situations. It also tackles other serious topics (Loss, addiction, sexuality, mental illness and SA) in a light but effective way (although that creepy footballer guy should have been punished or reported to the school for what he did). Ellie Pillai shows the reality of being a brown girl in a small white town wonderfully, her quirky personality, love of old music and Sri Lankan background not fitting in well with her peers. trials and tribulations at school, with family, friends and potential love interests, interspersed with musical interludes.
