Heaped with a semi-optimistic splurge of retro synth squiggles and world-weary songwriting, this album slowly and infectiously became the soundtrack to a disappointing decade, built on intricate and simple motifs that bear the longevity - and endurance - of the music and the feelings within. Uncut 's John Mulvey stated that "Murphy's talent is to proudly flaunt his influences, and to mix them up with belligerence, an exhilarating grasp of rock and dance dynamics, and a powerfully snarky sense of humour.

All My Friends" begins with a piano riff that sounds not unlike a speeding train (or, at least, Steve Reich's approximation of one) and rolls downhill into fireworks. So, the expected disco-pogo guitars-meet-synths club anthems of "North American Scum", "Us V Them" and "Watch The Tapes" mingle with emotive home-listening songs like "Someone Great", "All My Friends" and "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down". Sound of Silver was produced by the DFA and recorded during 2006 at Long View Farm in North Brookfield, Massachusetts and DFA Studios in New York, New York. I have no idea why anyone listens to tat like the scissor sisters when these guys show how to make top dance / rock / whatever music with a genuine soul. Tim Jonze of NME wrote that while "Murphy's wise enough never to let his showing off spoil the fun, he can't avoid investing these songs with heart and soul .

ONE of the great things about LCD Soundsystem is that there are so many nods and references it's almost impossible to name-drop a band/singer of influence and get it wrong. Compared to the first LCD Soundsystem album, Sound Of Silver is less silly, funnier, less messy, sleeker, less rowdy, more fun, less distanced, more touching. So it's fitting that the finest work of Murphy's career is an album that sits squarely at the intersection of all those careening ideologies. That turnover period was an exciting time; the ideological tension, the feeling that something was at stake, the exuberance of redrawing your bounds.

In that respect, Sound of Silver isn't far removed from LCD Soundsystem's eponymous 2005 debut, which ultimately tried to do the same thing but fell slightly short. It's an absolute joy to listen to, for every possible reason, not the least of which is because, these days, those epiphanies feel like they're coming fewer and farther between. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The silver ink stamped labels are also a nice touch, although they smudge off with ease so it's worth being delicate when playing them.
