As a special guardian, you may be able to get financial help from children’s services, such as a special guardian allowance. Children’s services will assess your financial situation, decide what support you should get and review it every year. Respond to requests for advice and information from providers of early education, Designated Teachers in maintained schools and academies, and providers of alternative provision in their area in respect of individual children supported by the local authority. Special guardians are normally a child’s relative and often their grandparents. However, you do not have to be related to the child to apply for an SGO and it will depend on your own situation. In some cases, you may need to apply to the family court for permission to apply for an SGO. He warns common policies include local authorities paying SGO families an allowance for two or three years and then cutting them adrift. “You are abandoning families; you are abandoning some of the most vulnerable children in society,” Priestley says. The educational achievement of ‘looked after’ children is overseen by a ‘virtual’ school head teacher in all local authorities. The law changed in April 2017 so that all virtual heads must include advice and guidance for previously looked after children living within their authority.

Goes” is the best choice for the plural form. It is recognized by many English dictionaries, too. You do not need to worry about any other form as the plural of “go.” Go’s

My main understanding from this guidance, is that the 26 week court timescales which dictated the completion times for the Special Guardianship Assessment, now recognises the limitations of SG assessment being completed in short timescales within this. A serious case review into the child’s death , published earlier this year , found she suffered more than 150 injuries while living in the home of her special guardian, Kandyce Downer. It concluded that Keegan should never have been sent to live there. Whilst the child is looked after to the Local Authority, prior to the SGO being granted, the Virtual School will assist new parents with the educational process and aid planning for when the SGO is granted. It is essential that a Personal Education Planning Meeting is held, where parents attend. This will allow for the Virtual School to give advice and guidance and access funding via Pupil Premium where required. The Virtual School can also put you in touch with the Virtual School in your area, should the child move out of Staffordshire. The plans are based on the needs of those involved but typically include details around health, education, emotions, identity, finance and housing.

Special guardians and the children they care for can meet with a nurse to assess children’s health and look at any needs they may have. If needs are not being met we can help signpost to health services to get more support. TrainingThey will usually agree to complete initial and then full assessments of you over a period of weeks and months whilst the care proceedings are going on. If your circumstances are particularly promising, you may be appointed by the Local Authority as a temporary (“Regulation 24”) foster carer for the child so that you can care for them whilst the Court case is ongoing. A positive assessment usually leads to the Local Authority funding some limited legal advice for you and you should ask your assessor or the child’s social worker about this.

You must be over the age of 18 and you must not be the parent of the child who is the subject of the application. Some people require permission of the Court before they can apply for an SGO. It’s important to know that the allowance is discretionary and means-tested, which means it will depend on your financial situation and your local council’s children’s services don’t have to pay you an allowance. A social worker will assess your financial and personal circumstances, decide what support you should get and review that support every year. If the Local Authority are not supporting your application or refuse to assess you altogether, then you will need to apply to Court to challenge as part of the care proceedings. The best opportunity to apply would be immediately after receiving a negative assessment from them, as you can immediately set out why you believe the assessment should have been positive and demonstrate your commitment.

Although SGO placements are safe, secure and appropriate for many children, Keegan’s death, along with two cases in Oxfordshire and Nottingham – both involving children either abused or killed while in the care of special guardians – has once again raised concerns about how SGOs are being used. You may also be able to get support through the Adoption Support Fund (GOV UK) Financial support from children’s services Children’s services will need to carry out an assessment to look at what support your family needs, including any financial help. However, not all special guardians and the children they care for are entitled to an assessment.

Enquire how they spend pupil premium. Ask about the facilities the School has and look for a nurture room and group, ask if one-to one time is built into children’s timetables and how friendship-building is supported. Guardians/carers should recognise that different schools may have different approaches to spending the pupil premium, but they may be equally effective. You need to tell children’s services in writing 3 months before the date you want to apply to the court for an SGO. SGO Info is pleased to see Special Guardianship on the agenda, this guidance recognises the challenges in SG Assessment timescales. That this is hindering to the child, the prospective Special Guardians as well as special guardianship assessors. Depending on your situation, you may be able to get government benefits, including Universal Credit, Child Benefit, Pension Credit or a Guardian’s Allowance (GOV.UK).
