In 1931 Boye, together with Erik Mesterton and Josef Riwkin, founded the poetry magazine Spektrum, introducing T. S. Eliot and the Surrealists to Swedish readers. Together with the critic Erik Mesterton, she translated Eliot's "The Waste Land". She was largely responsible for translating the work of T. S. Eliot into Swedish. Dorrit Willumsen (b. 1940), author of the novel Bang,came to visit us here at Norvik Press for a chat with her translator, Marina Allemano, about their shared fascination in the (endlessly fascinating!) life of Herman Bang. Bang is welcome to join the party too: he will make a most excellent speaker in the after-dinner slot. It is certainly a confusing book to read. But it is short, and what it says is relevant. I found myself constantly forgetting that it was written in 1934 - it feels very modern. The translation is incredibly smooth and at no point was I pulled out of the text to wonder what the original really said; I was completely faithful in the translation. The only thing is that they don't tell you what fröken is although the term is used - it just means "miss," I gather.

Crisis by Karin Boye, Amanda Doxtater - Dymocks Crisis by Karin Boye, Amanda Doxtater - Dymocks

Boye's novel "Crisis" (Sw. "Kris") depicts her religious crisis and lesbianism. In her novels "Merit awakens" (Sw. "Merit vaknar") and "Too little" (Sw. "För lite") she explores male and female role-playing. Karin Boye has come to prominence recently with the release of a fresh new translation of her classic dystopian novel Kallocain (which I previously reviewed for Shiny New Books here). Boye was a Swedish author of both poetry and novels; her short life ended with her suicide in 1941, but she’s still highly regarded in her home country and the success of Kallocain has brought her to a wider Anglophone readership. Crisis is an earlier, modernist work, and is a pioneering look at a religious crisis which leads to a lesbian awakening. Victoria Benedictsson (1850–1888) would be an esteemed guest at the party. Her first novel, Money, was published in 1885. Set in rural southern Sweden where the author lived, it follows the fortunes of Selma Berg, a girl whose fate has much in common with that of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Ibsen’s Nora. The seating plan would need to allow for everyone wanting to converse with Benedictsson about the radical literary movement of the 1880s known as Scandinavia’s Modern Breakthrough. Norvik Press are delighted to announce that two of our translators have been shortlisted for the Bernard Shaw Prize 2021:

Jag måste stanna upp, gå tillbaka, tänka. Det belönas. Det finns en skatt gömd i hennes poetiska rader. Det glimrar till och jag bländas emellanåt. Karin Boye var utan tvekan ett geni. Everything is called into question -- "Everything has changed recently. I've begun to doubt everything", she admits -- as even the apparent certainty of her future no longer offers that easy hold: when she is summoned to the Principal's office and asked what her plans are after she completes her studies: She is perhaps most famous for her poems, of which the most well-known ought to be "Yes, of course it hurts" (Swedish: "Ja visst gör det ont") and "In motion" (Swedish: "I rörelse"). She also wrote a few novels including "Kallocain". Inspired by the rise of National Socialism in Germany, it was a portrayal of a dystopian society in the vein of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Huxley's Brave New World (though written almost a decade before Nineteen Eighty-Four). In the novel, an idealistic scientist named Leo Kall invents Kallocain, a kind of truth serum. The novel spans one academic year shortly after the end of the First World War, beginning with an assembly at the start of the school year and closing with the graduation ceremony.

Boye's 1931 novel Astarte was a criticism of the bourgeois culture, and won a Nordic novel prize. Her novel "Crisis" ( Kris) depicts her religious crisis and lesbianism. In her novels "Merit awakens" ( Merit vaknar) and "Too little" ( För lite) she explores male and female role-playing. [2] Malin is a deeply religious Christian. She is studying at a teacher's college to become an elementary school teacher. Just about all of her classes revolve around theology. Suddenly, she has a crisis of faith and wonders what it means to be faithful to God. Malin comes into conflict with her religious consciousness and thinks of herself as selfish. Romanen Krise, som forelå i 1934, er ikke bare en nærgående beretning om et opprevet ungpikesinn, en ung sjel i de dypeste konflikter mellom tro og tvil og retningsløse drifter. Det er en eksistensielt rystende roman der hele verdensordenen står på spill. Ja, forfatteren lar den gode og den onde makt spille sjakk om hegemoniet, hvit mot svart. En mørk og en lys side som bekjemper hverandre. Den lyse kraften er den kristne moralismen og den mørke kraften pubertetens sprengende vekstkraft med «hemmelige ønsker og fantasier, fulle av raseri og nytelse». Munken tar diskussionen med humanisten och teologen med medicinaren. Malin själv talar med läkaren och läraren om sina tvivel och känslan av meningslöshet inför Nya testamentet och budorden. ”Gudagrubbel” som någon kallade det.This is particularly relevant for researchers seeking to analyse the information contained in SKBL (Biographical Dictionary of Swedish Women). Amalie Skram (1846–1905) is not for the faint-hearted. Her oeuvre includes Betrayed, Fru Inés, and Lucie, as well as her correspondence: Skram had access to the leading figures of the time, from radical writers and critics to politicians, so there’s plenty to whet one’s appetite! There is some dialogue at the end of the book, a discussion about Malin's transformation that involves a lot of different people. I absolutely hated this as part of the ending because most of the participants in the discussion said how selfish and disgusting Malin is for following her "desire" instead of her beliefs. This just confirms Malin's biggest fear and thoughts throughout the novel. selectedStore.City }}, {{ selectedStore.State }} {{ selectedStore.Country }} {{ selectedStore.Zip }}

Crisis – Norvik Press

Psssst, her biography is sort of a bummer. If you’re up for the drama, read on, if you’re more keen on some beautiful poetry, scroll on!)Initially, I wanted to read Crisis because it was mentioned and briefly discussed in the Swedish Netflix show Young Royals. For those expecting a sapphic romance novel: Crisis is not what you are looking for. an intellectually inclined young girl, erotically unawakened, and studious to the point of overexertion. In 1941 Karin Boye’s lifeless body was found on a mountain near Alingsås at a view point which she had often frequented with Anita Nathorst. Opinions vary as to whether this was the result of a planned suicide or whether nefarious elements were involved. The police, however, made nothing of the fact that Anita Nathorst had advised them where she could be found. Her days will be a struggle against forbidden feelings. At night she’ll sleep on the floor to escape dreams she is not allowed to dream. But then she falls for a fellow student, Siv. Instantly, everything becomes clear to her again, even though Siv and Malin hardly interact with each other and Malin's relationship with Siv seems to play more in her head, in the form of daydreams, than in real life.
