I love the way the author dealt with this. It’s a sensitive issue and I felt that it was approached and told in a respectful way.

so if you're into stories with taboo, great plot, and bumping uglies you've got to add this to ur TBR. The mystery, the goddamned mystery, is what kills the reader. ALWAYS. I wish I was the Birthday Girl. What did she wish for anyway? Can you bloody well tell me, Murakami Sir? Penelope Douglas does many things very well. One of the best of those things is her ability to make something taboo seem irresistibly satisfying. With Birthday Girl, she twists the older man/younger woman taboo and makes it compelling, sensual, and a wonderful treat.” -Eden Butler

After reading the literary disaster known as Killing Commendatore late last year and the very tepid Men Without Women the year before, I was just about ready to give up on Murakami. I was expecting Birthday girl to be heavy in the feels but it turned out as just another book I will forget about it in a week. There were a few eye roll moments culminating in the final scene, when he goes to the motel looking for Jordan. Dear Lord! That was so cheesy! He was barely there when she needed him, always partying and cheating. always makes her do all the chores in the house because he has a hangover or is out partying.

There’s something about forbidden romances/taboo topics that tests and pushes and makes you questions your original stances on it, whatever they may have been, and from whatever preconceived notions they may have originated from. And that’s what I am. Her boyfriend’s father. Nothing more. But deep in my heart, the small ember growing bigger and bigger every day knows that’s a lie.

Murakami studied drama at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Yoko. His first job was at a record store, which is where one of his main characters, Toru Watanabe in Norwegian Wood, works. Shortly before finishing his studies, Murakami opened the coffeehouse 'Peter Cat' which was a jazz bar in the evening in Kokubunji, Tokyo with his wife. With his unique take on magical realism, Murakami shows us that something fantastical could be happening in the very mundane reality of life. And that's kind of special. His stories are about real people who encounter some (possibly) extraordinary things. Birthday Girl, though very concise and short, lingered on my mind for days. I’m still questioning it right now. It could have been nothing spectacular, and it could also have been something grand and magical. It depends how you view the world. Rating and feelings still stand. This was even better than I remembered it to be and it’s now become one of my all-time favourite romances. Cole was a douche the whole story until the end when he suddenly had an abrupt change of heart that I didn’t see coming. It felt bizarre. When had he grown up? As for the characters, while the birthday girl's character is not something that's enticing but the recluse owner's seems pretty captivating, oozing with a certain charm and mystery one can hardly grow accustomed with without being unnerved. And yet, you want to know him better, perhaps, get inside Murakami's mind and undo the weave of his character, get right down to the fabric of his enigmatic existence.Love love love Pike. Oh mama! Now that's a drool worthy daddy! And ofc our sassy bitch Jordan have my respect more than any other heroines.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.Ahora bien, a partir del 60% de la novela diría que la cosa decae bastante. The main thing I love about Penelope Douglas’s book is that she doesn’t just write sex scenes for the sake of it. She doesn’t just write them to fill in the gaps, they are a big part of the story and have a meaning. Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas blew me away! Once I read the synopsis for this book, I knew it would be one that I would drop everything to read. And I did. I stayed up till 4 am reading this book the night it landed on my kindle. I wanted to slow down and enjoy the story, but I had to know what would happen. I could not put it down. This book was straight up addicting and I loved every minute!
