Light and cool read, plus lots of interesting details about ecology stuff - I might take action and join the local bat and badger groups :)

The main protagonist is a conservation ecologist and it's a profession which she shares with the author. It's an oft-said proverb that authors should write what they know, and Dr. Yarwood-Lovett has done just that; describing the realities of crawling through brambles to map badger setts and collecting and analyzing bat poop with gleeful abandon. Did you know bat droppings are (logically enough) full of insects and they crumble, whilst rodent poo *squishes*? I didn't, and now we both do. It's relevant to the story. Its a well crafted plot with good well identified characters but for me it seemed more 'a woman's book' ( am I still allowed to say things like that?) written by a woman primarily, I suspect, for a female reader. There is much made of the love interests and in this respect, the ending reminded me of '4 weddings and a funeral' although I'm not sure why. There are also several surprises throughout the book - a couple times I actually gasped out loud. They were pretty juicy. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Dodd is increasingly frustrated that he can’t just slit someone’s throat and steal his horses because he’s been wronged (as he would have done at home), but at last he hears the glorious words Sir Robert is Hunsdon’s youngest (eighth!) son, a clever, handsome charmer, who has expensive tastes, so is always broke. He’s also a gallant courtier and a ladykiller, but his heart belongs to a married woman, sigh . . . (and we don't like her husband). There's just something about K. Ancrum's writing that appeals to me. I love everything she writes and this was no exception. I truly made me want to listen to the podcast, and I never have. But this was just too good and these characters were amazing, I want more from them.

a murder of crows Collective nouns for birds: Why we call it a murder of crows

What better introduction to teenage investigators who solve a complex series of murder, past and present. The teens use the newspaper archives, on microfilm, explore older books and maps, and follow clues to find out just what Founders Day has to do with Murder of Crows. More they solve crimes and prevent even more murders from occurring. I believe there is a follow up in the works for which I am truly grateful. Detailed, lyrical and imaginatively done, A Murder of Crows was a huge hit for me. I also found the plot to be compelling and very well paced. The mystery and thriller aspect was well woven too, I saw next to none of it coming. The setting is what first captured my attention for this novel. Northwest Scotland at its most foreboding, during a freak storm in September. The descriptions in this novel were very vivid. The storm, the farm, the woods, the crows... Dr Nell Ward is an ecologist. You didn’t know you would become so interested in the lives of bats. This was to lead Nell to become number one suspect in a local murder. Nell will have plentiful choices to make both in love and trying to clear her name. This is very obviously being aimed at, what could possibly be described as, "The Richard Osman Market". Even the cover (which I think works well) is stylistically reminiscent of those used on The Thursday Murder Club series. Will "A Murder of Crows" also emulate the success of Mr Osman's books? Well, I suspect not - although it is intelligently written and generally avoids the excessive cheesiness of many cosy mysteries. R.F. Kuang, Sue Lynn Tan, Rebecca Ross, Kate Heartfield, N.E. Davenport, Saara El-Arifi, Juno Dawson and Sunyi Dean Sometimes the collective noun applied to a particular bird was a marker of rank. Berners gave a list of which birds were suitable for hunting based on one's station in life, and the names for those groups were also class-specifics. So hawks came in casts, for two kept in a nobleman's hawking tower, or leashes, for three kept in a tower. Cast was used to mark technique: Berners notes that one should always cast a hawk at prey, and never let it fly. And a leash of hawks was modeled on the name for a group of hunting greyhounds, another animal favored by the gentry.

Alistair's mother Alice was an empathetic character and the prose gave heft to her alarming plight. The most violent thunderstorm in living memory occurs above a sleepy village on the West Coast of Scotland. A young couple take shelter in the woods, never to be seen again...” Tig Torres investigates Hollow Falls' horrific history in this original novel based on the hit podcast Lethal Lit from Einhorn's Epic Productions and iHeartRadio! I enjoyed this read, but once the murderer is exposed there's a little too much after story. I believe that this is the first in a proposed series, so perhaps the author is just setting the stage for what is to come. Time will tell. Tig, along with her friends Max and Wyn, steps in to help, but the stakes are getting higher and the hunt more deadly. Someone's willing to kill to keep the town's secrets buried, and if Tig's not careful, she'll be the Murder of Crows' next victim.Sir Robert’s father is Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon, generally believed to be the bastard son of Henry VIII and Mary Boleyn, making him a powerful first cousin to Queen Elizabeth. The first in a new series keeps you interested throughout and would well be worth a second look in future.
