Description

AIAIAI’s headphones and their components are built to the highest standard, with no compromises on quality. From the unique bio-cellulose speaker drivers to the lightweight materials, you’re guaranteed precise professional-quality sound and supreme comfort with every version of the TMA-2. Unfortunately, the lossless nature of the W+ Link tech is somewhat sullied by a high noise floor, meaning that the connection produces a static hiss even when nothing is plugged into it. This can be somewhat remedied with volume tweaks to both the headphones and media source, but those who like to listen loud will have to deal with the noise.

At first glance, you may be tempted to write of the AIAIAI headphones as just another fashion brand. Style over substance. While only the basic AAC and SBC Bluetooth codecs are supported, this is adequate for us iPhone users, as AAC is the highest quality supported Bluetooth format. To be fair, sound quality differences between the wired and wireless connections are fairly minimal and both work great, especially for use on the go. The wired connection seems to provide a touch more low-end punch and high-end sparkle, but it’s nothing dramatic.

By using this material in our products we have contributed to recycled [sic] over 25 billion plastic bottles. Compared to making what’s called virgin fiber, making REPREVE offsets using new petroleum, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserving water and energy in the process.” – AIAIAI If you think - like some people do - that pricing is off the mark: I would suggest that you think again.

AIAIAI describes the S05MKII as “detailed sound (midrange focus)” and combined with the Alcantara pads, the Studio Wireless+ are on the warm side of truly neutral sounding, with fairly rolled-off high-treble and sub-bass. But not so much detail that you obsess, and definitely not too much to burn your ears out (hence the giant 3k earbuzz omission, and my personal ‘hate zone’, which is a known quantity at this point :D).

In fact, there’s very little on the market to directly compare them to thanks to their unique feature set, but if all you’re after is an all-round excellent pair of Bluetooth headphones, Sony’s flagship cans are the better buy. Design AIAIAI offer five speaker units at the time of writing. Sold in pairs, the speaker units are entire cups that easily attach to the TMA-2 headbands without the need for tools. Each speaker is specifically tuned for a specific purpose and sound characteristic. All speaker units currently use a 40mm driver with the same outer shell, with only the internal speaker diaphragm changing. Things stay clear and natural sounding, although edges may be slightly blunted and rounded off. There’s good presence, but I wouldn’t describe the MOVE Wireless as crisp sounding. Enjoyable rather than critical listening. Treble The TMA-2 Studio Wireless+ are specialty headphones built for a purpose, and they excel when used as intended. If you are looking for a traditional generalist pair of Bluetooth headphones, there are likely better options to suit.

What sets AIAIAI apart is their artist-focused and highly collaborative approach to product development. AIAIAI have cultivated an impressive network of professional DJs and producers, who are consulted at every part of the process - from the beginning to the release. Because AIAIAI thoroughly road-tests their headphones in studios and on stages before release, you can count on them to deliver exceptional performance from the get-go. Regarding sound quality improvement, the ability to support lossless CD-quality wireless transmission is fairly moot, as even the lowly AAC Bluetooth sounds quite good these days, and headphones that support higher resolution codecs such as LDAC are becoming common. Not to mention, the elevated noise floor introduced by the W+ Link is undeniably a sonic trade-off. A massive 80-hour battery life is possible if connected via Bluetooth, but this diminishes to just 16 hours on the 2.4GHz band. This, coupled with the 30-hour battery life of the wireless transmitter, means you’ll be charging two devices every few days if you use the latter technology. While the suppressed highs and lows make for a less exciting listen than something like Sony’s WH-1000XM4, the overall balance feels more neutral and makes for a more clinical profile with decent (but not exceptional) separation. The sound clarity won’t match audiophile-grade cans or dedicated studio monitors, but it’s a step above much of the wireless headphone competition. Short coiled wires protrude from the inside of the band to plug into the ear cups, and I appreciate the right wire has a discrete yellow indicator to signify the side. The plastic band pushes firmly through the cups and has nine size adjustment points per side, providing plenty of fit options. The ear pads are plush and comfortable. Other cables include inline mic options with a lightning port for iPhones, USB type C for Android, and finally a Triad hi-fi cable. The triad hi-fi cables feature better shielding for reduced interference although we’re unsure how noticeable this difference will ever be. Robust, durable and nicely finished, we have no complaints with the TMA-2 cable options, with a cable to suit every need. If you need headphones with low latency (i. e. for playing guitar without cables) that can also be used as normal headphones for gaming, watching videos or having online meetings, then I don't think there are that many alternatives. Pros:

The bass is tuned with a mid-bass focus that doesn’t overwhelm the other higher frequencies, ensuring a decent amount of detail in the presentation. The low latency (specifically, 16ms) of the 2.4GHz connection is one of the key advantages of this medium, and here the Studio Wireless+ performs magnificently. Testing out both Ableton Live and Adobe Premiere Pro for audio and video editing respectively, we noticed no discernible lag between the playhead and the audio landing in our ears. The same cannot be said for using these programs with Bluetooth. You don’t want or NEED perfection in a player can – you need the groove to be there to follow, and you want enough of yourself to know what’s going on. Like the bass region, the midrange seems dialed just above neutral, which yields a balance between easy listening and detailed presentation. As the frequencies rise, the forwardness seems to recede, avoiding any sort of shoutiness or harshness to the upper midrange. Treble Responsible, long-lasting design is one of AIAIAI’s core principles. They achieve this by using their famed modular concept, allowing you to easily repair and upgrade your TMA-2 headphones, and favour sustainable materials. In addition to reducing their carbon footprint and impact on the environment, this approach also greatly extends the lifespan of their products.

I attempted to measure the frequency response of both pad types, but the smaller, on-ear nature of the E10 pads and the stiff silicone ears on the EARS device likely skew the measurements. It all works far better with over-ear pads which make a superior seal. However, the dissimilar sound signature lines are indicative of the real-life sound difference between the two pad types. Comparison of the frequency response graph between the E04 and E10 ear pads as measured on a miniDSP EARS measurement fixture. Bass Some details, then. As I proclaimed in a summer missive entitled I miss my Sennheiser HD 25 –but squint and these DJ on-ears could be them, it's as if Danish firm AIAIAI has presented a fix for my ageing cheap DJ cans with the TMA-2 DJ XE. The flagship feature of these headphones is its ability to switch between a Bluetooth connection and a wireless 2.4GHz connection (dubbed W+ Link), the latter promising almost no latency (16ms) and the ability to stream uncompressed audio up to 1500kbps. For reference, FLAC files encoded from CD audio (44.1kHz/16-bit) have a bitrate of 1411kbps. However, to fairly judge the Studio Wireless+, one must consider their tuning and what the unique W+ Link brings to the table. Only upon close inspection and handling, do you become aware that the Studio Wireless+ follow the general idea that ‘simple is elegant.’ XO1 W+ Link transmitter
