Accusations of treason, sexual perversion, incompetence, and impiety could be hurled at powerful men with near impunity. With the focus shifting from the common soldiers (who could naturally be expected to view everything through their army experience) to the political and military leaders, the absence of anything but a military viewpoint seems a little odd.

However, in this book I didn't really develop any feelings for the Roman characters - particularly Flamininus - until the last few chapters at which point I finally got the "he's a bit alright" feeling about him. What's more we see the other end of the scale, Prince Philip, a charismatic but oftentimes ruthless hero king plagued with concerns for his nation and those around him. THE FALLING SWORD is the gripping follow-up to CLASH OF EMPIRES from Ben Kane, the master of historical fiction – for fans of Simon Scarrow, Harry Sidebottom, Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell. Get ready for the climax of the Roman invasion of Greece in Sunday Times bestseller Ben Kane's latest historical adventure in mass market paperback.p>Read about how we’ll protect and use your data in our Privacy Notice. Again there are great characters on both sides of the conflict and we get involved in their daily lives as they struggle. It is rare that I dive wholeheartedly into a Historical Fiction novel, as I often find that the descriptions leave something to be desired, a kind of mix of then and now.

The major battle is treated more or less accurately, the basic problem being that Phillip committed half his troops to go to the top of the hills, and for whatever reason only committed the second half of his troops somewhat later. Clash Of Empires is the gripping first historical novel in a new series from the Sunday Times bestselling author - for fans of Simon Scarrow, Harry Sidebottom, Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell. The book’s greatest strength is its depiction of what it felt like to be in the Roman and Macedonian armies at the turn of the second century BC. Other top books were Rosemary Sutcliffe’s Eagle of the Ninth and The Silver Branch, Henry Treece’s Viking sagas, as well as loads of fantasy – JRR Tolkien, Guy Gavriel Kay, Julian May, Roger Zelazny and Stephen Donaldson. One empire will rise Flamininus of Rome and Macedonian King Philip’s battle-hardened armies are on the march towards their final, climactic encounter. The minister fell on his sword after a day that began with senior Tories observing a deliberate silence over Hancock’s future – seemingly to test public opinion in their constituencies – before many later broke ranks to insist he had to go. Impale your holy sword at a location where it deals 1226 damage over 5 seconds to all nearby enemies.

Sad to say, this wasn't Ben Kane's best effort, but it's still an enjoyable read with likeable characters (the regular Roman troops and the Macedonians) and is a must read for those who follow Kane's books. There are those that fall on the sword for others and those that only fall on the sword for themselves. The battles that take place are both detailed and savage but I really did have to stand back and admire the tactics and battle plans of each side. He’s blackmailing Flamininus and misusing him in a way that seems to curiously undermine Flamininus’ intelligence. It is equally as gripping as the first part and the narrative, descriptions and adventures within are just as enjoyable and exciting. The writing was described rightly by my husband as “brilliant” and you really are engaged with the entire story even though this is a quite a sturdy book. As a real animal lover, all I’d ever wanted to be was a veterinarian, so that’s what I put on my university application form. In addition, Falling Sword's damage is increased by 10% for every yard you travel while charging the attack.
