The latter is unquestionably an honest, glamorous and wild ride of a book but there’s something about “I Don’t Take Requests” that really gets to you. I’d had thirty years of destruction, and just survival, and there’s a big difference between surviving and living. When I'm playing music, I'm reading the energy of the crowd, I'm not playing for one person, I'm playing for everyone'. DJ Fat Tony – real name Tony Marnach – and his co-author Michael Hennegan will be in conversation at Selfridges in Birmingham, as they celebrate the paperback release of I Don’t Take Requests.

I have been waiting for clearance from the Qatar government, for me and my boyfriend, who are both HIV positive, to go to a country where it is illegal to be HIV positive,” he said. How do you make light of losing your entire peer group, how do you make light of losing your boyfriend?

People thought I was dead and didn’t really give a shit about me, I never wanted to be in that situation again. I’d give this book to every single one of my party people and dare them to not find themselves in these pages.

The difference was that everyone in New York wanted to be in London, and everyone in London wanted to be in New York. This is the first year that an Attitude Award has gone to a book that has made a significant difference to the LGBTQ+ community. But what it reminded me of was the first time I ever went, it reminded me of the beauty and the purity of the island but without all the external stuff going on. Bar his commitment to sponsor others as part of his own recovery, it doesn't sound like he has ever once done a good deed or a nice thing for another human being, there wasn't one example of empathy or kindness. Who can do that better than 'club culture's national treasure' DJ Fat Tony, whose friends include the likes of Kate Moss, the Beckhams and even Elton John.

Instead, we went about it in reverse: first writing the synopsis, then finding the agent, and finally the publisher. Tony is open about the fact that he nearly didn't make it, that when in the throws of addiction, there's usually no clear escape route. She said: “We are all so proud of the sheer determination, courage and quite a lot of front he’s shown in telling his story – the good and the bad – in a way that has resonated with so many. Attitude Magazine’s editor in chief Cliff Joannou also commented: “I first met Fat Tony when he was one of the headline DJs at the infamous Trade club in the late 90s. I laughed out loud, I cried, I re listened to some chapters which really resonated (and struck a nerve, and I’ll probably listen to it again!

Publisher Hannah Black, who acquired the book in 2021, described DJ Fat Tony as “an absolute force of nature”. It’s a brave book, to come out with some of his darkest moments, and it’s great to read and know that he was able to turn his life around, get sober and now is able to offer help and support to others struggling with addiction. He spent his teenage years parading Kings Road in his mostly stolen latest fashion attire, worked as a receptionist at a brothel, hung out with Leigh Bowery and Andy Warhol, and created his drag persona; all before becoming DJ to the stars – including Prince and Madonna – and spiralling into a life threatening drug addiction. If I was making music today and I put out a track and suddenly one person said ‘oh you should change the bassline, it’s not quite right, that hook is not quite right’, why would you listen? The Soho of now seems sedate, gentrified and pastiche in comparison to that of the 1980's, which saw Fat Tony start on his journey as a DJ.
