Description

I think that this is the perfect book for educating people on Asaba as well as the other important topics covered in this book such as covering up from the British Government and Onome’s experiences as one of few black students at the university. To read more about the book and my motivations for writing it please visit this article published in the Retrospect Journal: https://lnkd. I’ve included a quote at the beginning of this post that I wrote in the article, which really encapsulates my motivation for writing this book.

I liked the pacing of the book - the letters were well spread out (and exactly how I imagine letters are written) in between diary entries from the two women. The University of Edinburgh has been home to numerous talented individuals, and second-year history and politics student Claudia Efemini is no exception. I am beyond excited to be working with my editor Lily Laycock and self-publishing my book in spring 2023. Since its official publication on 20th March it has been a pleasure to receive such a positive reception reflected by amazing reviews.

At McGill, I am looking forward to taking a variety of courses in history and political science exploring a range of areas such as African history, international relations, and indigeneity. Onome is an international student from Nigeria studying law at King's College London whilst Chioma lives in Asaba, Nigeria. Claudia is also a Culture Editor at The McGill Daily whilst currently doing an exchange year at McGill University. As a second-year History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh I am currently in the midst of editing my debut novel A Letter Away From Asaba, set to be published in spring 2023.

Both characters were bold, courageous, and brilliantly written; they accomplished much more than individuals at their (fictional) time were able to. This is not at all to say that my time in Edinburgh so far has not helped me cultivate ideas for this book. Efemini thoughtfully uses diary entries and letters to create a lucid and intimate account of Asaba's censored micro history. Very excited to be attending Dr Velma McClymont's book launch on Friday 21st April 6-8pm at The University of Edinburgh.
