I got this for home recording. I've got Rhodes, clavinet, etc in my studio but I obviously can't bring them home every day. Sonically, we're happy to report the Reface CP is pretty impressive. Sure, you only have a three-octave velocity- sensitive keyboard (though one that feels very nice as it stands) but connect a sustain pedal and a weighted controller and use it as a sound module and you'll likely be very happy with the all-round authenticity and response of the onboard pianos. As a Combo Piano, the reface CP offers six classical keyboard sounds with excellent quality thanks to SCM (Spectral Component Modelling) and AWM2 sound generation. But come on, 128 notes simultaniously, battery fed, it’s just that it’s small but indeed, you can put it right on top of your big keys and bob’s your uncle. The Reface CP is based on the long running CP stage piano series first released in 1976 with it's latest and most up to date model still available today. With the Reface series however, Yamaha wanted to get the soul of those original 1970's CP instruments and it's reflected in theawesome aluminium panel design with old style switches and pots for you to tweak to your heart's content. The reface Owner’s Manual, in the reface CP Voice Setting Examples section, provides examples of combinations of effects settings useful with different instrument models to recreate vintage keyboard sounds. Connect Your reface to a Full-size MIDI KeyboardThe tone of the instrument is great especially if you decide to hook it on a pair of nearfield monitors for practice, like i did. All the voices are great and usable except the Toy-Piano which i didn't find appealing at all. I can't imagine how this sound can fit in any mix, but that's just me. The built-in speakers are also very impressive in terms of sound quality. The stereo tremolo when combined with the Rhodes sounds is enjoyable and eargasmic. All effects are very responsive and most important easy to tweak while playing. The interface is super simple and a no-brainer, just the way it should be. The Yamaha Reface CP offers instant gratification – great sounds and effects, with everything very clearly laid out on the front panel. You canplug the Reface into a larger rig and just use it as a compact top quality sound module for a larger keyboard with fully weighted keys. Big Sounds

Connect a USB cable to send and receive MIDI over USB to a Mac, a Windows PC, or an iOS or iPad device. Reface Capture– this is an iOS patch librarian. We could not test it, because it was not available in time for this review. Because the Reface CP has such a user-friendly front-panel, we don’t see much of a need for patch librarian. Architecture and Sounds.Of the four Reface synths, the DX is the only one with patch memory: 32 overwritable presets. Because of the intricate nature of FM synthesis, this is an absolute necessity. That said, it’s worth mentioning that even Yamaha’s 30-year-old DX100 offered 192 presets, so 32 seems a bit skimpy, especially in light of the sonic versatility. a b c d e f "Yamaha Reface synths reviewed!". Thanks to its maturecircuitry, thesound is warm and rich and has all the artefacts and intricacies of the original. Thesounds available on the CP offer many of the bread n' butter, basic go to sounds for a keyboard player.Connected to all these sounds is a drive knob that has a different amp model that matches depending on what patch you have chosen.

[12] After their announcement, the Refaces drew comparisons to both the Roland Aria series and Korg's Volcas due to their affordability and inspiration taken from their respective companies' previously released synthesisers. [13] In 2016 Yamaha released both a web app (Soundmodo) and a mobile app to facilitate sharing and saving of preset sounds on the Refaces. It's a "small" sound, but an accurate one. If you're in a quiet space, you'll be fine without headphones, and you'll be surprised at the detail (effects, timbre, reverb, etc.) of the sound. I didn't hear any distortion (unless the "drive" knob was turned up), but I didn't pound on it at full volume, either. 80% of full volume was plenty audible for me. Looking forward to trying it through headphones (for noisy room cases). Cons: Probably the only one would be the three octaves, but this can be solve with an external midi keyboard.

It’s a combo piano, in mini keyboard form, that lets you play the most iconic electric piano sounds. The build quality is ok. It's obviously not built like a tank but it's better than most in this price range. I'm sure it will last many, many years if taken good care of. MIDI. This proprietary connection accepts the included Yamaha MIDI break-out adapter to connect standard MIDI cables. Professional, swift service at competitive pricing..They kept me informed of all updates regarding delvery. Will use again. The form factor is GREAT! No annoying menus. No computer screens. Everything is very "hands on". I love it! Very convenient size too.Overall, very pleased with this instrument and its features from a home practice, live and studio perspective. The keybed is too light for my taste, but I'm getting used to it, and contrary to other carry-on keyboards I've had, you play yourself closer to it over time, not away from it. In short, it's playable. The three pairs of effects have a 3-way toggle switch, enabling choosing one effect from each pair. The up position selects the first effect. The middle position turns the effect off. The down position selects the second effect. Yamaha tells us that these instruments are sourced from their CP4 Stage (reviewed Jan. ’14), and they certainly sound like it—which is to say, their quality and authenticity is what you’d expect from a high-end stage piano, though of course that keyboard has more variations on each sound type.
