Hannah The best action horror story I have ever read’ BOOKZONE FOR BOYS‘'Teen' and 'Vampire' doesn't always mean 'sparkly'; this Young Adult thriller injects some blood and thunder back into the vamp mythos…a fast-paced and intelligently thought-out story. From there, Jamie is taken by Frankenstein (yes, that Frankenstein) to Department 19, a secret sect of the British government that deals with supernatural.

I have no idea how many books are planned in this series at the moment, but I am more than happy to keep on reading them for years to come if they are as good as Department 19 . It didn’t seem to bother me when I was younger and reading about girls in Christopher Pike’s books, but it does now. Department 19 is the first book in a series, but unlike many books like this it does bring the main plot of the story to something of a natural conclusion. For example, when vampire die, they just don't crumble into a pile of dust, they freaking explode into showers of blood. Gripping, gory, and violent, this isn't for the faint-hearted - but it's also clever, and moving, and wittily done. However, in Chapter 17, "The Black Sheep", Henry Carpenter is stated to have died in 1922, meaning that he could not possibly have been unimpressed with John Carpenter's decision in 1939, as he had been dead for 17 years. Jamie is determined to rescue his mother, even if his only allies are a hulking green monster and an imprisoned vampire girl. If you love vampire stories this will be fun reading, I hope the sequels will be better because I have the intention to read it. Back in November some bloggers got a little carried away on Twitter by proclaiming Department 19 to be the next Harry Potter. Jamie Carpenter’s father is dead, his mother is missing, and he was just rescued by an enormous creature named Frankenstein.

It was so refreshing to meet an actual villain who is just as terrifying as you would want them to be, and the same respect goes for the good guys. There's no sparkling here - just an action-packed race against time, from Victorian London to 1920s New York, from the Russian wilderness to the tiny island of Lindisfarne, where the most evil creature on the planet lies in wait. Teen' and 'Vampire' doesn't always mean 'sparkly'; this Young Adult thriller injects some blood and thunder back into the vamp mythos…a fast-paced and intelligently thought-out story. I am nearly certain this is just my personal taste, however, as some reviewers said they felt genuinely attached to Jamie. After a short training, Jamie tries to save her mother from the crap of the notorious vampire Alexandru who tried to kill him, but Jamie will have very little support from the Department 19.Not content to have his young hero battling all kinds of evil, he makes sure that the reader truly believes in the world he has created. I feel more forgiving in this than I would in an adult book because most kids aren’t looking for complex layers and hidden depths. And this is his début novel – I imagine there will be many an aspiring author sticking pins in Will Hill voodoo dolls whilst going slowly green with envy.
