Description
Funny bones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is one of my most favorite childhood books!! The book is about…”a big skeleton…a little skeleton…and a dog skeleton…” one night all three were bored in bed and decided to go outside to “scare somebody”. The story goes on, the skeletons walk past the houses on the street, and the shops, and past the zoo, and past the police station and finally go to the park where they look for someone to scare! It is 1953, and in Oldbury Town there is to be a football competition. Rood End Primary enters its two best teams, but there are a few others who want to make their mark too.
This book also has many potential curriculum links to Science because of the theme of skeletons and bones. In the classroom, teachers could discuss the importance of skeletons and the names of important bones. Also, the reference to ‘dark’ and ‘night’ could prompt discussions and activities about light and dark sources. Similarly, how and why we get day and night could be explored in the classroom. With reference to Art, pupils could draw and label human/animal skeletons for a class display. But during the dark, dark night, the skeletons like to come out to play… in the park, in the zoo and even all the way home, singing songs and scaring each other. They live in a dark, dark cellar of a dark, dark house on a dark, dark hill and so the word repetition continues through this lighthearted story for early readers. The skeletons venture out of their cellar one night to find someone to scare, but everyone is in bed, so they amuse themselves by scaring each other and playing with the skeleton animals that live in the zoo. Teaching Ideas and Resources: English Als kind vond ik dit boek fantastisch en nu nog steeds! Er zitten komische details in de teksten en de tekeningen. Ondanks de thematiek is het totaal niet eng.In the first book of this now classic series, we are taken down the dark, dark street to the dark, dark house and into the dark, dark cellar in which the skeletons live. The skeleton family consists of an adult, a kid, and a dog. They live in a basement and decide to go for a walk one night. It's really all harmless fun that does have a bit of a creepy edge. I mean, they're skeletons. 😅 It is a particularly dark, dark night tonight, and Big and Little keep bumping into each other, making them fall to pieces, and there is only one thing to do: send in Dr. Bones, who does a great job of patching them up to stop them from bumping in the night. Funnybones: Bumps in The Night - No matter where they are, the two skeletons keep going bump in the night - clonk!
The author uses ‘word repetition’ throughout the book to make it enjoyable to the reader and also to make it humorous. A song is also included in the book, and I remember as a child reading the book over and over again and singing along out loud! When The Big Skeleton and The Little Skeleton become fed up with The Dog Skeleton they decide to swap him at the pet shop! Funnybones" by Janet and Allen Ahlberg follows a day in the life of a skeleton family! This is entertaining for children to read as it shows a contrasting way of life to which they know. The skeletons wake up when everybody else goes to sleep and the nighttime is their daytime. Of course the town is deserted when they are awake as everybody else is asleep. They have to find imaginative ways to entertain themselves.
Through ourTime to Read programme, we give every Reception pupil in England their own book to treasure and share at home. Here's a look at some of the fantastic picture books that we've handed out around the country, for free, over previous years.
The skeletons like to explore at night time. Why do we have day and night? What happens to the Earth and Sun to give us light times and dark times? The pictures in the story are all based in dark places. Investigate light and different light sources. Little gets bored with the quiet life on the dark, dark hill. So he decides to go to the city before he gets worried about Big and Dog getting lost. "There are too many skeletons" says the Big Skeleton in the city and even the underground has them.Dog is having his favourite dream, the one about a big, juicy bone.
