ALERT FOR SANGEAN AND ALMOST A DEAL BREAKER – as mentioned in the Zantow review, and in other comments I have seen on the 909×2, the drop in level from AM to LSB is a killer negative.

This shortwave radio is capable of giving a clear and crisp sound output, thanks to its Digital Signal Processing technology. Another home run for Sangean when it comes to the keypads on the 909×2, which can be compared in this respect to the Tecsun H-501x which itself improves upon the 990x when it comes to front panel control. Time will tell, however, and we shall see if the keys on these radios hold up in heavy use. UP/DOWN SLEWING RSSI and SN Digital Signal Strength Information are provided on the beautiful 909×2 display. This is an improvement over the Tecsun signal strength/SNR meters that I wish would be redesigned, if in fact Tecsun has any intention of future modifications to their portables. NO SOFT MUTING Next up is the aux-in port which allows me to add a different source of input to my Sangean ATS-909X2. There is also a button to turn on and off this input. Honestly, I don’t use this and can not really imagine why you would want to. Maybe that is just me.The radio has an alphanumeric memory system that you can use to access 406 present stations. There are 351 presets for shortwave, 27 for FM, 18 for AM, 9 for long wave, and 1 priority. These include, for those interested: the Panasonic RF-B65, SONY ICF-SW77, ICF-2010, ICF-PRO80, ICF-7600D, ICF-7700, ICF-SW1000T, ICF-SW55, ICF-SW100s, ICF-SW07, Grundig Satellit 500, to which were added in more recent times the Toshiba RP-F11, XHDATA D-808, and Tecsun portables ranging from the PL-365 and new PL-368 to the PL-880, PL-990x, H-501x, and S-8800. As well, both portables come with long extendable whip antennas and windup external wire antennas for pulling in weaker and rarer SW stations, along with signal strength meters, stereo earbuds and even radio cases.

Some have attributed issues to 909X2 firmware VER 070. I have not. I am waiting for my 909X2 to return following installation of VER 073 firmware by Sangean USA. I’ll pass along any performance changes with the new firmware if I find any. International broadcast organizations use radio waves, and radios make essential survival gear for many people globally. You can get the list of all Shortwave Radio Stations here. The earbuds shipped with the Sangean ATS-909X2 are more than sufficient but nothing special. I personally don’t like the style of them as they don’t fit in my ear very well but that is a very subjective issue. This poor fit means the sound quality is less than optimal, which again would vary considerably with someone whose ears these fit in better. The wires are also very thin making me fear they will not last long with any real kind of use. https://www.panasonic.com/middleeast/en/consumer/home-entertainment/audio/other-radio-products.html For internal Li-ion batteries, you can expect a runtime of up to 30 hours on a single charge. Such internal batteries have a capacity of 1000 mAh to 4000 mAh.The 909X2 has been incredible fun. I have enjoyed using the auto bandwidth feature on shortwave and MW. There are instances where this feature is very useful particularly when it is difficult to copy words from a challenging signal. Use this feature in conjunction with the audio tone control for best results.

For the monitoring professional who's on the go, the ATS-909X2 is the ideal choice! Featuring wide-band AM/FM coverage from long wave, medium wave, short wave. The DSP comes as standard (Digital Signal Processing) with the unit and includes a number of features which can significantly enhance reception through improved interference rejection. For everyday portable operation, use four "AA" batteries (not included). For operation from your home, choose the supplied AC-AC power adapter. charging and power supply design was much improved for the 909X2. 4xAA NiMH cells are individually charged and monitored. Charge times are faster, as well. The radio will identify cells that are defective, aging or wearing out. Each cell now has a separate slot in the battery bay. This contributes to longer battery life cycles, less waste heat production and improved rechargeable battery safety. This is a worthwhile but not very obvious upgrade from the 909X. The most noticeable outward change is the wider battery bay door. excellent SW receiver modifications / antennas / filters and service since 1989 . In Streaming, Modern Processing and Monitoring Matter

I provided a demonstration of 909X2 auto bandwidth control (ABC) on this video of RNZI recorded at a distance of 6,600 miles. This recording was posted on YouTube two weeks ago. I switched on ABC at about 2:18 into the video, during a music selection. The effect of ABC on a fading signal can be disconcerting with music but a useful tool with speech. In addition to the action of AGC on the signal you have rapidly switching bandwidths constantly changing audio response as the radio seeks the bandwidth with the best S/N ratio. These processes seem to work together most effectively with speech rather than music. In this recording I am using the audio setting at NORM, which usually provides the brightest audio on shortwave and MW. More often than not I find that the NEWS audio setting sounds best when using ABC on rapidly and deeply fading spoken word. The NEWS audio setting is tailored for the voice range found in conversational speech. The FM band usually has a frequency range of 50 MHz to 150 MHz, but commercial radio stations usually using the range 87 MHz to 108 MHz. The AM band occupies 550 kHz to 1720 kHz (0.55 MHz to 1.72 kHz). One of the oddities of VER 070 firmware was a nice feature, actually. Cycling the INFO button would bring both radio signal strength (RSSI) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) up on the display at the same time. This feature was not described in the instruction book. With VER 073 you can toggle between one or the other but can’t see both at the same time. You can see this deleted feature below and watch it on my video: If you want a radio powered using a wall power outlet, that’s a different thing. There is nothing to discuss. However, if you are opting for a battery-operated radio, there are two options that you will get. The challenges of precision-tuning analog radios, plus the reliance of international shortwave broadcasters on switching between multiple frequencies and bands to reach global audiences 24/7, explains why direct-entry pushbutton digital radios came into this hobby almost 40 years ago.

REVIEW : "Belka - DX" Direct Conversion DSP Micro HF Receiver Added review on the Belka-DX ultra tiny HF receiver. "Thank You" to Hal H. who made this review possible. (Aug 17, 2023)I also found that using LSB or USB for standard dual sideband AM broadcast reception on shortwave (often called ECSS reception) can favor either or neither sideband using the 909X2. Try switching sidebands if one seems to offer unusually low audio response. My manual for the Sangean ATS-909X2 appears to also be in French and Spanish but since I am not fluent in either of those languages I can only assume those translations are as good as the English version. If I am incorrect, leave a comment here and I will update this review to reflect that. Included Accessories
