When on the charging stand, the LED’s on the brush handle will usually illuminate and then the battery icon on the handle flash a white light as the battery is replenished. Both come with a premium travel case and a 2+ week battery life. A visible pressure sensor, 2 minute timer and pacer are built-in too. iO Series vs Genius X

Genius X Electric Toothbrush Powered By Braun | Oral-B

Ultimately you should only commit to buying a brush at a price you are prepared to pay and deem valuable to you. Two of the more cost effective models within the Oral-B range of electric toothbrushes, these two are among the most popular models available on the market today and either serve the vast majority of users very well. However, the iO’s light ring will also be lit green when the correct brushing pressure is applied. You actually want the green ring to be lit for the full 2 minutes of brushing if you can. You don’t have this on the Genius X. Oral-B iO Smart Pressure Sensor I’ll come on to how that affects the user experience in more detail below, but aside from this, there is really no discernible difference between the design and features of the two toothbrushes. They both have six brushing modes – Daily Clean, Pro-Clean, Sensitive, Massage, Whitening and Tongue Cleaner – and they both alert you when you apply too much pressure, simultaneously reducing the brushing speed. Oral-B Genius X review: Oral-B app and performance However, the reality is that the iO and the Genius X are typically sold for approximately 50% less (if not a bit more) than their advertised retail price. It’s all very well brushing for 2 minutes, but no good if you only brush your front teeth for all that time. Of course, the blue teeth that change colour are giving you the visual clues you need to spend time cleaning each section of the mouth, but I would have preferred the option to enable the timer and pacer when using the app, even if I continued to brush longer because I had missed areas.

Please note. There are multiple variants of the Oral-B iO. It is the range-topping iO Series 9 that I am comparing here primarily making reference to the Series 7 and Series 8 where appropriate. The Genius X has technology inside which automatically stops the brush charging once it is fully charged. Manufactures, not just Oral-B often overstate the benefits of the additional modes. That is not to say they can’t be beneficial, but more beneficial is using the correct brushing technique and brushing for the right amount of time over which mode to use. Of course, one of the unique features of the Genius X is the charging travel case. It is similar in its operation to the charging stand, but the brush lays in the case rather than standing upright on the stand. Both models offer most of the benefits of an electric toothbrush without having to pay ‘too’ much for them.

The Genius X offers the latest in toothbrush technology, but there’s a hefty premium to pay to be an early adopter

However, whatever mode you end your brushing cycle with the brush will default to when it starts up again, so this could be a workaround. Also, the brush won’t turn off automatically, so once your mode’s time is up you’ll need to find the on/off button to power down. Oscillating toothbrushes feature rotating and pulsating round brush heads that can rotate up to ~8,000 times per minute, depending on the model. While they're slower in this department, oscillating toothbrushes benefit from the rotating head, which is fantastic for fighting plaque. For example, I can tell if I need to focus on just the inside surface of the upper right teeth, whereas the Oral-B graphics are not quite as specific. There is no battery in the case, to charge the brush and anything connected via the USB cable the case has to be connected to mains power.

As for the accessories, these are more or less the same, too. In addition to the standard charger, you get a luxury travel case that carries the handle with up to two heads and that also doubles up as a charger. Though there’s a USB slot on the case, don’t be fooled into thinking you can use it to charge the toothbrush, as I was. The clue is that it’s a USB-A connection, which means you can use it to top up the battery in your phone or another device as your brush charges. The Smart 6 comes with1 x CrossAction, 1 x Pro White/3D White and 1 x Sensitive brush head, but the Genius 9000 comes with one additional brush head, that is the FlossAction head.

But, another slight difference is that the iO does not change the sound of the brush like the Genius X does when too much pressure is applied. You only get the light warning with the iO, which is a real shame. However, whilst it need not be a suction cup holder, it would be nice to see some sort of stand included with the X. Without it, you have to realistically hold the smartphone in your hand or have it close by when your brush. Ideally, you want it right in your eye-line so you can monitor your brushing approach, but also your brushing time. Argh, this is really frustrating. Oral-B’s own promotional video for this brush demos the smartphone connected and sat in place within the case, but conveniently doesn’t mention you can’t use the app at the same time! You get the standard features like the 2 minute timer, 30 second pacer, rechargeable battery and fading indicator bristles on the brush head.

Oral-B Genius X review: The future of toothbrushing | Expert

Yes, there is an 8 and 7 Series that are marginally cheaper, but I am focusing on the top of the line model here. Finally, we submerged the toothbrush underwater for a full brushing cycle to test its water resistance. The Oral B Genius X had no problems during this test or afterward in terms of performance or water damage. Another slight difference is the 9000’s lovely travel case has a clip built into the lid that holds a smartphone, for using the app when travelling.
