The art and dialogue complement each other as they express the tension that Kim and her friends felt as they tried to balance school, family, and romance with surviving in a dangerous political environment.

Or as the book’s back page blurb summarises Lewis’s interactions with Lois: “He knows she hates her body. All of it felt important and integral to the story, and I appreciated Hancox's candor and the ultimately gentle and humorous tone with which he land out these adolescent troubles. This memoir set in a small British town is narrated by the author in comic book format as they relate what it was like to be white closeted trans man in the early 2000's. It made me feel so seen to see him share all his thoughts and see how he also tried to repress being trans but deep inside knew he was a boy since he was a little kid. Open Library is an initiative of the Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form.

When presented with the option of pants or a skirt for his uniform upon beginning high school, past-Lewis chooses the skirt to circumvent potential bullying but, as fellow classmates and narrator Hancox insists, he “was a boy in a skirt. The daughter of modest restaurant owners, Kim was apolitical—she just wanted to make her parents proud and be worthy of her tuition expenses. Every story I've heard about trans guys before they've got to start transitioning really young and I always feel so jealous and overthink that what if it's too late for me.

As a result it’s also an important social record of that era as Lois’s transition to Lewis is fraught with overly officious obstacles and prejudice.

The long-awaited second instalment in Samantha Shannon's Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling series Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. But the new wellbeing collection of 27 books, targeted at those aged 13 to 19, has sparked a backlash over a section on sexuality and gender identity. Hancox is very generous and empathetic as he details his friends and family's journeys to getting on board with his being trans. One of two gender books is titled Welcome to St Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure, by Lewis Hancox, a memoir of a girl transitioning to a boy, narrated through illustrations. But Hancox's graphic novel is not just about his own story of growing up and becoming who he was always meant to be, it's also a lifeline for younger readers who may feel confused about their own identities, or who are sure of their identities but feel unsure of where to get support. As you might be able to guess by the cover, he inserts current-Lewis into a candid narrative about his teen life, including his coming out process, and realizing he was trans. The Family Education Trust, a think-tank, has complained to the Reading Agency and the Arts Council England, alleging the books have “massive safeguarding red flags” by grouping 13 year olds with those above the age of consent. I found this a very effective way of weaving together the insight Hancox has now with the actions his younger self took based on much more limited information about gender identity, sexuality, and transitioning. A very hard-hitting graphic memoir about Lewis' struggles with gender dysphoria and anorexia as he grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s not really knowing that there was a name for how he felt. Helens, and the dialogue and narration are littered with regional slang, some of which sets the scene, adding cultural flavor, and some of which becomes repetitive and distracting.
